Unlike traditional striking martial arts, there is practically no punching and kicking, which keeps accidental injuries to a minimum, while the close physical contact and sparring help strength and conditioning. At Oranday Brothers Jiu Jitsu, the atmosphere is very welcoming. Typical schools at the start of the UFC and MMA craze were very aggressive, giving belts and promotion to the ones that would literally crush their opponents. Understandably, attendance would often be sparse, injuries high, and the eventual collapse of start-up schools. In today's environment at OBBJJ, the school is structured to build technique over brute force, allowing drill time at first before the students ever get to their first live sparring session. I've been attending classes at OBBJJ since 2016 and have never been in better shape. As a 40-year old slightly overweight man with arthritis in my shoulder, I have less daily pain than when I was in cardio kickboxing or heavy weightlifting, even though the classes and rolling leave my gi completely drenched in sweat. Stop on by, they offer a week free. It's great for kids and adults. The classes are also separated by age group so there is no intimidation. I took the plunge when I was 38, I wish I had started sooner. There's a saying about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: There are 2 best times to start Jiu Jitsu: When you're 6 years old, and today. See you on the mats.

We are taught through the gentle art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu that self defense is second nature. With hard work and dedication our students become champions on and off the mats.

My 15 y/o started first and this peaked my interest so I joined. Now, my 11 y/o wants to start. The instructors and the people that train here are so helpful in teaching and they want you to learn. This is a great attitude to have especially when working with people who are beginners. They actually take the time to make sure you understand the fundamentals. This creates trust and gives the school a "family" atmosphere. All of this starts with Professor Jaime Gomez. He is a great teacher that mixes knowledge, talent, passion, personality, compassion and humor into his instruction. I am so thankful I heard about this school. I look forward to going to train every chance I get!!!!

This gym is easily the best place to train no gi jiu jitsu in the southeast Texas area. Not to…read moremention the kickboxing and mma programs are excellent as well. It's a wonderful facility with tons of mat space. The instructors are extremely knowledgable and super supportive and helpful! Also, the mats are cleaned every day after practice which is awesome! The atmosphere is super friendly and all the students help each other get better at this combative martial art. The program is absolutely the best option to help you lose weight, because it's so fun you don't even realize you've exercised so much. Also you're learning a valuable and dominant form of self defense that can help you survive and function during any possible form of violence in the streets. (Hopefully you won't have to use it; but it's better to know how to handle yourself and not need it than the other way around.) As I mentioned before, everyone is super supportive and helpful of each other. And if you're nervous about coming in and getting "roughed up"; that is absolutely not the case. Beginners start slowly and everyone is mindful of new students. Also, the instructors never put a "spotlight" on students which can make some people self-conscious. Instead, the instructors show everything in detail and answer questions. Then you break into groups of 2 and practice the move. That being said, this is an excellent sport to get involved with a friend!

I am extremely disappointed with the way this gym has been handled recently. A coach made comments…read moreand decisions that came across as discriminatory toward children with autism, which is completely unacceptable in any environment involving kids. My wife has dedicated years helping and supporting students here, only to be told that her class was "geared toward kids like that," in a disrespectful and dismissive manner. No parent or staff member should ever be made to feel that children with special needs are a problem or less deserving of respect and inclusion. What's even more concerning is that the owner has allowed a newer coach to create a toxic and unprofessional atmosphere without stepping in. Leadership matters, and unfortunately it seems the professionalism and values this place once had are no longer being upheld. Because of this experience, I would not feel comfortable bringing my children back here, nor would I recommend this gym to other families.
