I've noticed that the office staff often appear unhelpful and unwelcoming. There's usually no…read moregreeting or effort to assist customers promptly. At times, I've seen staffs chatting among themselves instead of attending to people waiting for service. This lack of customer focus might explain why there are fewer customers here compared to places like JB Hi- Fi or the Apple Store, where customer services is much more engaging and professional.

Personally, I can't wait for the time when my printer runs out of ink, or I run out of paper, or…read moreschool is starting and I just need to get highlighters in every possible colour. Let's not forget about the regularly occuring need to stock up on sharpies, USBs, notebooks, journals and staplers. I have a self imposed ban upon entering Officeworks unless I absolutely need to. If I do go there, I need to have a guardian with me who will hold my purse. I am a stationary fiend. I can justify any purchase. Not surrendering to Officeworks is sometimes the biggest challenge of my day. When they designed Officeworks, they had me in mind. They said "lets build a colossal multi-level store devoted to stationary and home office needs. The office workers, the creatives, the students, the parents will come in DROVES. Just watch them." It's a brilliant idea. Who doesn't need pens? Even farmers need pens. Astronauts, too. You can get EVERYTHING you need from Officeworks- well, all the basics at least. Forget fancy artist pen sets, go for the Faber Castell set of 24 connector pens. That'll do the trick. Printers, computers, iphones, ipods, phones, external hard drives and all associated accessories can be found here. The staff are extremely friendly and really do like to show off their knowledge of the home office machines. "Oh, your Mac won't recognise your external hard drive? Well that's because X doesn't...". Yes, you will have those conversations and you'll love it because you'll walk out with the right bits and bobs you need. Let's not forget they have photo printing facilities as well as on demand copying services. Ohh! The joy. The SHEER JOY of being handed warm paper just off the press is sometimes too much for me to handle. Bonus points for the selection of chocolate bars they sell at the counter. Shopping does make you hungry.

All the cliches about Sunday newspapers being a waste of time are true of The Sunday Mail, the…read morelightweight Sunday edition of The Courier Mail. Reviewing The Sunday Mail can be done via a Simpsons quote. (I love it when life can be thus conveyed.) In the episode 'Guess Who's Coming to Criticize Dinner?' Homer is a food critic for the local Sunday newspaper and gets into an argument with his editor: "Editor: Listen, you've got to shape up. Next week is the Taste of Springfield festival. You'll be reviewing every restaurant in town. Remember, people have certain expectations about the LifeWays section. Homer: Really, like what? Editor: Oh, I don't know. Astrology, "Brunhilda," vacation horror stories, articles about chronic fatigue syndrome. You know, chick crap." Blunt and crude but basically true of The Sunday Mail. Male crap comes in the form of stuff about cars and fishing. Unisex crap is supplied via the weddings pages, where you can look at photos of people you don't know doing what literally hundreds of Australians do every day. Unfortunately the lifestyle section spills far outside of its designated lines into what is supposed to be serious news sections. If you want to read a newspaper that has fluff and serious local news stories in equal amounts, pick up mX Magazine, the free daily rag available in the CBD. It's more fun, it involves amusing reader input and it will ink up your fingers just as well as The Sunday Mail does.

I'd probably give another half star if I could because I don't mind the old Sunday Mail. After…read moreyears of seeing it every Sunday morning we decided we could do without it and got divorced without a qualm some months ago when I cancelled my subscription at the local newsagent. I didn't have time in my life for it any more; it often went only half read, or would get a quick flick through on Sunday night, to check out the first few pages of hard-ish news, the recipes, then the lifestyle fitness pages (priorities, right?) and of course the stars. Yep, I could do without it. But I do miss it, especially on a rainy Sunday morning like this one. Think I might just wander up to the corner and get me one.

My local newsagency, Premier News & Casket at Merthyr Village, has arguably the best range of…read moremagazines in the area. This place never fails me, and as a print media magnet I rely on Premier News to have a new and exciting magazine every time I come in! Of course they do the usual newsgency things and sell cards, stationery, lotto tickets and the like. The staff are always lovely and have even gone to the effort once of ordering a magazine in that I was dying to read! It's really the huge range of mags that tickles my fancy though. There's everything from sport to yoga to architecture to music. It's a hub of creativity down that middle aisle, and I love it. If you're on the hunt for a hard to find mag, than give these guys a call. If they don't have it in stock they will usually source it for you.

After Borders was disgracefully shut down, my friend was in shambles realising he couldn't find the…read moremagazines he likes. We've searched so many newsagencies to find them so we resorted to him ordering online- which, I suppose is fine. Then to our surprise while we went to pick up some goods at the Merthyr Village in New Farm, we went to the newsagency and low and behold, there they were staring back at us, all three of them! 'Computer Arts', '.net' and 'Web Designer'. After 3 months, the search is over. This place is cool. While other newsagencies don't stock the creative mags, this one does. It must have to do with the demographics of the area of New Farm. They must have thought, "Well yes, all techies, designers, creative's live or work in this area, and so therefore we should stock what they want!" And thank goodness they do. The only thing is, buying online is much cheaper, even including the shipping. While it is £8 online, it is $25 in store... Ouch. I suppose what money does buy, is the experience of purchasing magazines traditionally. You walk up to the stand, pick your magazine knowing you're walking out with it, but you still flip through the pages before you check out. In some ways, it's worth the $25.
