Union Theological College is the Presbyterian Church's theological college in Belfast, providing the base for those who want to become ministers in the Presbyterian Church, or just desire a higher level of theological training, as well as teaching courses for those who want to study theology as a degree. The latter is linked with Queen's, with Union providing the means for many Theology students at Queen's to study their degree.
I had never intended on studying Theology in any shape or form, but in my first year at Queen's, I was informed that, as an Arts student, I must select three other modules in other subjects outside of English. I chose two Theology modules (both of which were based in Union) - Introduction to the Old Testament and Introduction to the New Testament. The former was taught solely in Union, mainly by Patton Taylor (who I have to admit is an absolute hoot, as well as a good teacher), to those who were undergoing a Theology degree, as well as those (like myself) who had picked up a module in order to fulfil the requirements for my degree. The latter was partly taught as Union, but Professor Campbell, who was also a very educated man, and taught with ease.
My choice of modules were only a couple from a much wider range, so if OT / NT studies aren't your thing, don't fear. They also teach Hebrew and Greek, Church History, Practical theology A Level RS, and more vocational courses, which are linked in with the training side of things, such as youth and children training courses.
Union itself is a fab institute to be part of. Interestingly, the building was the meeting place for some of the first parliaments in Northern Ireland, and it really is a magnificent building. There are a number of classrooms, including a huge meeting room which doubles up as the 'church' room, where services are held, as well as a fantastic library, and excellent accommodation. I had a friend who lived there for first year, and used to come to class in her slippers. Wish I could've done that...
I thoroughly enjoyed my two semesters at Union, and would urge anyone looking for a place to study Theology to give it a go. read more
