Polar bear made skating fun and easy for my daughter (and myself too XD)
francesca p.

I haven't been here in years! My kids and I decided to visit the holiday ice rink around 2:30pm and it was wonderful because it wasn't as crowded as it usually would be closer to the evening. I could never skate without holding onto the wall but today was my first time renting a little polar bear for my daughter to hold onto while skating. You already know I was holding on as well and this made my experience much better (and more fun!) than those of the past! I was able to skate around the rink multiple times with my daughter while watching her enjoy her first time out on the ice. My daughter is 4yrs old and was super brave today! She had a blast during our hour at the holiday ice rink. She was eventually able to skate on her own while holding onto the polar bear as I stood holding onto the side of the rink, trying to snap photos of her, lol. I highly recommend taking your children here for some holiday fun! The environment was very festive, with the Macy's Christmas decor and HUGE Christmas tree in the center of the square. I will definitely visit here again in the next week or so to bring my son who missed out on today's festivities.

One of the better holiday highlights in downtown San Francisco. This has been a long time downtown tradition. I used to be an avid ice skater, but stopped when I had a bad fall. So, can't speak to the quality of the skates or ice on the rink. Even if you don't skate, it's free to be a spectator! The rink is located in the heart of Union Square, where during the holidays, the police are all out in force in the immediate vicinity.

4 stars because of the size of the rink. Many outdoor ice skating pop ups are extremely small, so this one felt a lot more spacious. General admission was $20 including skate rental and we also paid an extra $5 for a locker rental. You can keep your shoes and bags on the benches at your own risk, but they definitely do not allow any bags on the ice rink, so if you do not have someone looking after your things, the locker is the way to go. During peak season, I recommend buying your tickets online the night before because as you can see in the photo, a majority of the skating sessions were already sold out. Each session was 1 hour, but after 30 minutes and with all the people skating, the ice gets super rough and dangerous. Lots of toe pick holes in the ice and it's no longer comfortable to skate. From what I've seen, they will only use the Zamboni to smoothen the ice once before each session.

3.5 stars! It definitely gets you into the holiday spirit because the nearby xmas trees and lights agaisnt backdrop of downtown gives it a NYC white xmas feel. You do have to buy the tickets through their app, they don't sell tickets on site so you can't pay with cash. The website is a little confusing because you might be like "why can I only buy 1 ticket?" When really, the number you see is how much is left available. There's a limit for each session. I also recommend not paying for a locker unless you have super valuable stuff with you that you don't want to skate with. Otherwise just leave your shoes outside next to bench, no one should take them cause its a gated off area. Wish we knew that before heading over, since its outside we thought it was susceptible to stealing but its not shady, theres security around that prevent shady people from even being in that block. Of course never say never, I don't take responsibility if your stuff get stolen! I feel they let in too many people on ice rink, it was super crowded and at times felt like narrowly escaping bad skaters. So I wouldn't recommend doing this if its your first time, it will just make the learning curve that much higher. You need space to properly learn or else you'd be too scared.

A bit small. Wonderful location. You can take bart to go there, just a short walk. Not crowded. Price is a bit high but imagine skating under the stars, holding hands with you love ones. Romantic and yet covid safe! Good healthy exercise to do at night till 11pm. I will go again. Wear xmas lights with batteries to go there for an extra fun way to skate.

Ask the Community - Holiday Ice Rink In Union Square

Am I able to pay at the door if I didn't get tickets online?

Not when we went in Nov

Do they have bathrooms?

None that I saw when I went recently, but the bathroom my friend and I went to after we visited Off the Grid was the bathroom in Bloomingdales in the mall!

What happens if it's raining?

If there are light showers, the skating still goes on! If it's pouring, it gets cancelled. So if you've bought tickets in advanced, you would just have to come another day. There are refunds.

Do they rent hockey skates?

Yes! When you check in/buy your ticket there, you just go straight back past the booth and they ask which size skates you need.

What's the youngest age of child that is safe to bring? I have a 2 year old

It gets very busy and crowded, I wouldnt bring a child that i had to carry, but i've seen 2 year olds doing a good job, if you are right near them it should be fine. Or have them push the penguin (skating helper) and stay right behind them. My… Read more

Do they still have the free Wednesday's ? Also can we buy tickets at the door or do we have to order online?

I did not see a way to purchase at the door. Regardless, slots fill up fast so I would order ahead.

This is easily one of the most interesting places in SF, hands down. We had a chance to pay our respects by way of celebrating my best friend's birthday here. What a find...! Decked out with disco lights, the church glows vibrantly against the backdrop of its stained glass windows. Music of all eras reverberates through the high ceilings, a welcome greeting to all. I didn't realize that we were graced with the presence of the Godfather of Skate, D. himself! I should have done my research earlier. He casually swung by, in full purple regalia, and gave my struggling newbie self some tips. Within 10 mins, I was skating without shaking at all??? I never got to properly thank him...! I'll be sure to next time. NOTE: Bring cash to rent skates!

I'm sure you've probably skated at the Union Square rink or in front of the Ferry Building at Embarcadero. Now, you can skate under the glowing City Hall lights at Civic Center Plaza! The rink officially opened November 30 and I've already been twice! It is much larger than the one at Union Square, but smaller than the Embarcadero one. However, this ice rink features something brand new that the other two rinks don't have-a 400 ft skate track that you can skate & weave through the lighted forest! It is also the most pricey ice rink of the 3...$20 for Adult admission including skate rentals. Like the others, all skate sessions are 90 minutes and start on every even hour. The first time I went during the day at 2pm, I was the only skater on the ice at one point (not counting the employees!) It was fun to have all that room to twirl and spin and do whatever I want, but it was sunny out and a bit warm, so the ice was a little slippery from melting a bit. The second time I went was on a Monday night 8pm. I brought 20 of my friends and we took over the ice rink! Once again, we were the only group on the ice, minus a couple kids who left early. Since the rink is new and fairly empty compared to the others, the ice has been well maintained and very smooth, with little holes or bumps. Skate rentals go all the way up to a men's size 15, but they offer a $5 discount if you bring your own. Also, unlike the other rinks, this ice rink has an ON-SITE BAR. WOOHOO! So you can enjoy a glass of wine or champagne to loosen those muscles and conquer those fears! As your skate session winds down, don't forget to snap a few photos of you and your friends/family in front of the lighted Christmas Tree that glows in front of the illuminated City Hall! The perfect photo op! Tis the season for ice-skating, can't wait to go back!

Three days ago, I was planning to go skating with my friends and I remembered this T Mobile ice rink. However, I found out that it was permanently closed, as stated on Google maps. I looked at their Facebook and twitter and their pinned post said it was closed for 2020-2021 but never mentioned 2022. When I looked on Yelp, it said it would start in a few hours so that was confusing. I tried calling the number and both times it was just static and I could hear my voice on the other end. Otherwise, if it will open again, I do recommend this outdoor ice rink.

Best when you roll in with your friends…read more I have a strong love/hate relationship with this rink for many reasons (in the short 5 months I've started roller skating). I'll start with the negative; With any public place, you really have to watch out for yourself and your safety. I've gotten physically shoved by one of the older white men who felt like he owned the rink. There are times where you have sketchy people who don't skate and are eying your valuables or may be harassing people. There are some older folks you may need to watch out for, as they are extremely territorial and not friendly to beginners and new skaters. I will say that it is only a tiny percentage of the folks that skate here. On the positive side; It's generally pretty welcoming. If someone is working on something cool that you're interested in and you ask, some people are pretty cool with showing you the ropes and love working on it with you! I've made so many good friends just showing up and working on my own moves and people chatting me up. In general, you just gotta show up and assess the vibe, as it really changes depending on who's skating there. Generally I'd advise going on: Tuesdays and Fridays anytime from 4pm - 10pm (solid group of skaters who watch out for each other and bring lights and music when it gets dark) Saturdays and Sundays anytime from 12pm - 6pm (A lot busier and crowded. Your experience may vary depending on who you know and feel comfortable skating with on the weekend). I typically always go with friends for safety.

The situation began when Colton confronted the family because their daughter, who appeared to be around four years old, was eating a snack. While I understand that outside food may not be allowed, the way this was handled was completely unacceptable. No warning was given, instead, Colton immediately began shouting in front of the children. Several parents attempted to calm him down, but he continued to escalate the situation and began swearing. The young girl became visibly upset and started crying, and the family ultimately left shortly after. When others tried to speak with Colton afterward, he repeatedly stated, "No outside food," and said that if anyone had a problem, they should take it up with his boss, Brad. The entire interaction came across as a power trip and was absolutely disturbing to witness. My family and I love Oakland Ice and consider it a second home. We have met many wonderful people there, including members of the staff. However, this incident left a very negative impression--not only on me, but on many others who witnessed it as well.
