Union Square Endodontics is simply the best. Polite, kind doctors and staff. I have had several root canals done by Dr. Machule, and every single experience was excellent. Dr. Machule has never rushed with my root canals, and every time he tested and retested my teeth to be sure that a root canal was actually needed. Also, they are extremely good at numbing very painful teeth and have multiple techniques to make the pain go away in teeth that even my regular doctor could not numb. Root canals are obviously not something I ever look forward to, but I am at peace knowing that if I ever need another one, Union Square Endodontics will be there to help me, and I will be pain-free! read more

Union Square Endodontics was the emergency root canal referral from my regular dentist. I got the referral on Friday and scheduled my appointment for Monday, but on Saturday night my pain got so bad that I felt like I can't wait another day. Dr. Macchule responded to my call on Saturday right away and saw me on Sunday at 9 a.m. My experience was fantastic. The treatment went great, and the doctor's attitude was very kind and empathetic towards how much pain I was in. This is the second time I'm getting a root canal at Union Square Endodontics - and my first emergency root canal - and both times the experience was just fantastic. Part 3... ...and eased me through it and made sure I felt fine in the beginning & throughout the procedure. The only complaint I might have here is that I was NOT informed when making the appointment to not take any pain medication before my consultation (I take nerve medicine & acetaminophen in the mornings); the only reason why I knew not to was because I was informed about it at another endodontist practice for their consultation. Another thing they did not inform me on before an appointment was that I wasn't supposed to eat anything 4 hours before going under inhalation/gas sedation; as inhalation sedation can cause nausea and possibly vomiting. After it all, it is so much an indescribable relief to be able to chew (even sauté'd mushrooms) without pain that I've been experiencing since the beginning of the year! I would like to thank Dr. Chiu and those at Union Square Endodontics for the multiple, wonderful experiences and for being remarkably more affordable than the other 15+ (out of the 75 that were weeded out based on Yelp reviews) practices I called & inquired on! Because of such the positive experiences and cost, I've decided to go back to them for the root canal on the 3rd tooth! I would tell any reader and anybody that they wouldn't regret going here! UPDATE 1.5 years later After more than a year later, it looks like the root canals were expertly done and I have been pain free from the problem teeth since the procedures. Dr. Chiu was spot on about the one tooth not being viable for a root canal as that tooth ended up fracturing a couple of months later (while I was searching for an oral surgeon to extract it). They are so impressive that my new dentist took a look at the xray of the root canals and the work done and was very impressed and even moreso when I told her about it being done at Union Street Endodontics in San Francisco! Unfortunately, at this point, I doubt they take Delta Dental any longer. Again, after looking back, in the end, I recall Dr. Chiu, the staff, and this practice with nothing but fond recollections & experiences and couldn't recommend them enough! read more

Dental care was terrific. Dr. Anna Ratiner was excellent and performed the root canal without any issue. I had mild discomfort for a day, but it completely went away within 24 hours. The office staff was also professional, warm, and welcoming. I was less impressed with the recovery of my overpayment. While I paid estimated co-pays on the days of service and my insurance company reimbursed the practice within days of claims being submitted, it took over a month to get reimbursed for my overpayment portion. While the practice reimbursed quickly after I emailed them, I had to initiate the request for payment. This should not be the standard practice of a professional entity. Otherwise, the care and treatment was spot-on, and I will definitely recommend this practice to anyone in need of treatment. read more

I went to Dr. Machule on an emergency referral from my regular dentist. I got a same day appointment for a root canaland was a nervous wreck. But Dr. Machule and his assistant were fabulous, working smoothly to alleviate my concerns and the 90 min procedure was totally painless. They provide also pain medication (Tylenol, Ibuprofen etc.) preventively and all in all were making this root canal experience almost a walk in the park. I loved the use of 3D technology, x rays before, in the middle and after the surgery to make sure all was good. Lastly, despite a molar root canal, the costs were ok, and my insurance (Delta Dental) should cover the rest. Great experience considering the oh-so-feared root canal. Everyone was nice in the early morning I had a root canal treatment at 745am. I was five minutes late because it was too early for me on a Monday took the bus as usual it takes a while. Anna called me and I said I'm a block away. They were nice and understanding. When I arrived I was greeted and the person asked me for my ID so she could take a picture of it for my patient chart. Veronica the assistant was nice during the injection and the procedure. After the numbing medicine was injected I had to get the panoramic X-ray because the tooth is one of my molars in the back. The office was nice and big, it seemed to go on forever. The chairs were really comfortable and the office patient rooms were not small like downtown offices are. When I was at the reception desk checking in and doing the consent forms on the iPad I saw the amazing view of San Francisco! It was a nice view compared to my previous dentist office is in the same building. The dentist I have now who referred me to this practice, I like my dentist who isn't a dentist who thinks that they know or act like they know everything. I was nervous about the procedure of course and I have anxiety when I have to get dental work done. Veronica took my blood pressure on my wrist with a wrist blood pressure cup. Before the procedure began. During the root canal I felt the drill and the tool to remove the decay. I was originally quoted a lower amount, but it ended up to be $600 more because of the decay being in the roots. During the procedure there was several interruptions where people were asking questions about other patients. When the procedure was done I was asked if there was any questions I had before I could ask a question I felt that I couldn't because of the swift exit. I felt some pain during the procedure a couple of times. I wasn't asked if I needed more numbing and it was interesting that the medication barely made me feel like I was really numb, but I was numb. read more

Super thorough, did multiple tests and retesting before making any conclusions, thoroughly walked me through the scans and his thought process, and was overall super transparent which is unfortunately lacking in most healthcare settings. After I had a root canal & crown I was still having pain in my tooth (it's been quite the saga, spanning 6 months in both Atlanta & SF and involving 3 dentists and 3 endodontists--I'll spare you the details). My dentist in SF (who's amazing; Dr. Nina Carpenter at Zen Dental Studio) figured out that one of my previous dentists did a terrible job cleaning my teeth, so when the permanent crown went on it pushed plaque into my gums and created pain & irritation. She kindly spent weeks and weeks cleaning it out, which resolved quite a bit of pain, but not everything. I could tell there was still a problem, especially if I pressed on the inner side of my tooth or bit down on a particular part of the top of my tooth. So, she referred me to an endodontist to see if it might be: a) worst case scenario, a cracked tooth (which would have to be extracted), b) possibly a failed root canal (which happens if roots are complex, not really anyone's fault), c) related to the periodontal issue (where maybe something was stuck way down in my gums) and/or d) something else. I couldn't return to the endodontist who did my root canal in Atlanta (although she was great--see my review for Dr. Figueroa), so I looked at reviews for Union Square Endodontics. Thankfully, Yelp did not disappoint and my experience there was even better than the stellar reviews on here. The office was very organized and my experience with Dr. Hanley and Emily were outstanding. Dr. Hanley said right away that he didn't think it was a cracked tooth based on x-rays and the pattern of gum inflammation; to be safe they did a 3D scan but didn't charge me for it because it was just to confirm his diagnosis (no crack! yayyyy!). He also said there was no way that it was a failed root canal because he said he "couldn't have done a better job on the root canal." That was super reassuring. Then, Dr. Hanley identified a small imbalance in my bite base on the shape of the crown. So, he reshaped the top the tiniest bit and, like magic, it immediately relieved a good portion of the remaining pain (!!). I couldn't believe it. He explained that it was "like having a stone in your shoe." Since then, the pain has continued to go down, so although my dentist & I are still waiting to see if the pain does not fully resolve and I need to consult a periodontist, I'm hopeful I won't need anything else. Overall, I was impressed by their kindness and the quality of the care I received, especially after quite an ordeal. Can't recommend highly enough! read more

Diagnosed with a possible hidden hairline fracture in a tooth or maybe a root canal. That office suggested to have 3d X-rays and was referred to Union Square Endodontics. A root canal procedure was suggested from those new 3d X-rays. Doctor shortly after performed a root canal, fast and painless. 5 weeks later the same discomfort and pain returned to that tooth area. Returned to Union Square and now it was diagnosed as a hairline cracked in same tooth. Guess I should have seek a second opinion before proceeding with the root canal. I was refunded a third of the full cost of the $2000.00. Scheduled now for extraction and an implant at different oral surgeon to the tune of 5 thousand. read more

Just came back from getting treated by Dr. Machule and I was just blown away by how painless the entire process was. I had gotten a root canal once some 20 years ago and remembered dreading the experience - it took hours and it wasn't the most comfortable. The entire staff there was super nice despite all the shelter-in-place and coronavirus craziness happening. Dr. Machule is extremely friendly and professional. I was numbed up real good and I was in and out in under 2 hours. I felt no pain or discomfort the entire time. I am specifically writing a review on Dr. Darren Machule's high-end update technical expertise. Per my request he agreed to perform a root canal on an almost lost tooth as I stated to him over the phone that: "extraction is violence." With my full acknowledgement that there was a possibility I would lose that tooth in the future, Dr. Machule went ahead and delivered the work of a full competent professional of the highest order. Root canals in general are done in two steps, needing the patient's return to finish the work - he does in one session sparing the patient extra suffering and time. I was so impressed with his work that I took pictures of it. Being a sculptor myself I can say with certainty Dr. Machule is also an artist. Alex Hanley is Union Square Endo's best kept secret. I was referred here in 2019 by my dentist, and given to Dr Hanley for RCT. My teeth have complicated root calcification due to bruxism. He handled everything slowly and carefully. He made me feel listened to the entire time, and I am an anxious patient. I feel secure with his manner and skill. After my treatment, he supplied his mobile number to me to ensure I felt I could communicate my aftercare needs. This was not just a gesture - he followed through. I called him out of fear of the pain, he was always there. Just a text or call away. It's been three years since then. Every dentist I've seen (I moved a lot during pandemic) looks at my xray of my RCT from Dr Hanley and they are blown away. "Wow I could never do that good a job" "who did that it looks great" etc. In 2022 (last week) I got a referral for another RCT. I live 4 hours away from San Francisco. I wanted to see Alex Hanley. I called the office and they had me in first thing Monday morning. I flew in and organised accommodation in SF to make it happen. From the first second I arrived he pulled up my history and made indepth analysis and discussion and a recommendation. His level of communication throughout the RCT was top level. I had a lot of pain and needed a lot of numbing and I kept communicating through all the equipment in my mouth and he responded to every little whimper with deep care and his full attention. I asked the Assistant/Tech what they thought of him and they said he's the kindest/sweetest/most positive person to work with in the whole office. Alex is only working part time here so he's not always available due to other work (teaching) but gosh anyone who gets him will be very lucky. If you are an anxious person, ask for him. I went to see Dr. Chiu at Union Square Endodontists because I was having pain in one of my back, top molars. My general dentist sent me there. I knew nothing of Dr. Chiu or of her office. I've had a root canal years ago, so I wasn't completely uninformed. I knew what was coming and was feeling pretty anxious. Boy did I luck out!! Not only did Dr. Chiu completely resolve my complicated dental issue, but it was pretty much painless. She was AMAZING. The pain is gone and the tooth is totally fine. I'm so thrilled!! To put it simply Dr. Tim Wen and his technician Betty were beyond nice, cool and most of all caring. Thank you again for easing my pain. Before arriving at Dr. Wen's I was basically bullied by another dentist not associated with Union Square Endodontics, for being in the situation that I needed a root canal. I am so thankful that Dr. Wen was the one to do the procedure. Betty the tech was very gentle and patient while doing x-rays. When it came to getting the anesthesia shots I barely felt pressure, no pinch, no poke just a little pressure in the gum near the tooth. It was honestly the least intense procedure I've had personally. Once numbed up Dr. Wen checked on me and informed me of what was next and how close we were to being done. That constant assurance goes a long way to calming the patient imo. I believe every bit of care that Dr. Wen and Betty took resulted in a incredibly smooth and painless procedure. I wanted to hug and hi-five them all after. It's now two days later and I really have had zero to none pain or discomfort. Yesterday I went a full day before the meds wore off and because of my own doing I had a little dull ache, but other than that I feel completely normal. I wish I could go to them for my dental needs going forward because I think it's important to have care from professionals who treat you with care and respect and I 100% received that from Dr. Wen and Betty. If you take the time to read this please consider their services. Not every review is perfect and the suggest I have to offer is that the receptionist who takes care of the payment, I wish she would have listened to me and gone the extra little bit to provide what I asked for. I asked the receptionist to provide me with a list of dentists that they recommend/work with so that I may find one closer to where I live. Long story short she said that it depends on who's in my network and some might not be able to see me. The problem I had was that she should have given me the list and allow me to figure out what works for me instead of not giving me any options at all. It's a minor gripe but she was asked by the technician to provided it so I expected her to come through with that at bare minimum. Anyways take care of your teeth. I went into Union Square Orthodontics due to a failed root canal. The root canal was around 20 years old, and was giving me pain for over a week. If you have a failed root canal, it is best to get it treated ASAP! Dr. Ratiner was the only dentist who could see me the next morning and took care of my root canal that day. It is now the next day, and I am pain free! Thanks so much Dr. Ratiner! :D After reading some of the other yelp reviews I was a little worried, especially after Dr. Ratner mentioned possible treatments as being surgery or an implant. This was all standard procedure though, as she was able to clean my root canal and get all the broken metal pins out. No surgery or implant needed. Such a reflief as doctors had warned me to get the root canal fixed for years, and my gums were swollen to the size of a dime by the time I saw her! The root canal experience was totally different from 20 years ago. While there is still some drilling it is way less than before! Much more comfortable and easy. Dr. Ratiner answered all my questions, but was definitely "no-nonsense" and got right to work. This is an expert who does root canals day after day and who would rather get the job done than explain to every emergency patient what a root canal is. She got right to work, and her efficiency is why she can fit in so many emergencies. I could see dedication and artistry in her work. Much impressed! The end result is Dr. Ratiner gave me strong anti-biotics right away, and also treated me that same day. After 3 nights of little sleep due to pain, I had the best rest last night, and 30 hours later, I am writing this totally pain-free! This is now for those of you who may be worried about your root canals: 1. If you notice bad breath and unusual mucous around your gums, you may have a failed root canal. Take it from me, get it treated before you have pain! Though if you are reading this, you are probably booking emergency visits like I was. 2. If you have pain where your root canal is, and swelling in the gums. Do not delay! Go to an expert like Dr. Ratiner! Your gums and teeth get a huge share of blood and blood pressure from your heart. They affect your total health. We need to do what we can. Dr. Ratiner and Union Square Endodontics are allies in our fight against bacteria which are literally eating us alive!
