We enjoyed a picnic on Jack's Island. It's a little oasis in the park with picnic tables surrounded by water views! The trails are easy to walk and very accessible. Plus, did I mention the water views! So much better than walking around your boring neighborhood, right? Make sure you stop and enjoy this treat!

You can see glimpses of the park along the I-70 freeway on the south side of the Neuse River Bridge. There are boat launch areas and lots of beautiful wooden walkways with small fishing piers, benches, picnic areas, trails, a playground and the feel and scents of a marine environment. We discovered this fascinating, historical 'boat hauling machine' at one of the parking areas. The park is a great location to explore, exercise, fish, and relax.

This park contains one of the best disc golf courses in the New Bern area. Barring a few instances over the past year, this course has been well maintained and a blast to play. The first half has more open long range holes, and the second half gets deep into the woods with some really tricky shots. Most holes have two difficulty levels, as evidenced by the different starting pads and baskets. Overall, this course is challenging, and it's a beautiful hike to boot. B. This park has a lot of different species of frogs, toads and lizards. It's a ton of fun to just walk around and try to spot as many different little creatures as you can find. Being right on the bank of the Neuse means there are always interesting things to poke and the views are nothing to shake a stick at either. C. Glenburnie has a pretty awesome playground that my young nieces just love to visit. The equipment is very well maintained and is kept well stocked with plenty of children for your youngins to play with. As an adult, I find myself wanting to climb the giant rock they have at the playground every time I visit. D. Snakes!? Why'd it have to be snakes? During the spring time, I've noticed a water moccasin or two sunning themselves on the disc golf course between holes 5 and 10. As I said before, the grounds are well-kept at Glenburnie Park, so keep your eyes open and be aware of your surroundings and its not an issue. Overall, I love this park. Love this place and was saddened by all the damage Hurricane Florence did in late 2018. The good…read morenews is that the east side trails are open! I just hiked several of them and it appears there has been much work done to clear the trails of debris and add a top layer above the major trails for mountain bikes. I don't think most people know it is back open because the official government websites still list Flanner's Beach as closed. There are several wooden fences that were put up to prevent access to this area and the western trails. In fact, the entire parking lot is gated closed with "No Entry" signs posted everywhere. Although the camping area and circular hard-surface paths are open, access to the river-side trails is also blocked. I had to park at the small lot just south of where the county property ends. There are a few other places to park prior to there that will allow access to trails further away from the river. I'm hoping the western trails will open, but for now am grateful for whoever did the work to open the eastern side - thank you!

This is by far the worst place that I have ever had the misfortune of living in. New Bern is what I would call a white washed tomb. The old town has a pretty facade, but behind that is a shallow, pretentious town with a very high crime rate, mediocre food scene, and high priced bars, I went to Pismo Beach California not long ago and spent less there in 3 days than I did for one night in New Bern. The bars are weird, full of college students that honestly do not want to work, they're rude, they've added tips to my receipts (three beers and a meal came out to an amended charge of $150), I ofc disputed that and will never give that establishment my business again, my bill was $50 and I gave a $20 tip, a day later my bank statement alerted me that they changed the charge by $80. This isn't the first time or only place that has done this, as the spot across the street did the same when I went back into town for a drink and a quick meal 6 months later. Not sure what's going on there. Cops, despite the high crime rates, there are cops everywhere, but they are busy pulling people over for moving violations. This is the first place that I've ever lived where I have met several people on the same work crew as me who have gotten 3-6 tickets in a short time. This is the first place that I've gotten several tickets in 20 years, 2 of them I had dropped in court after having to pay hundreds for an attorney, and I just got a 3rd one that I will have to spend several hundred more for, plus court fees, the economy is abysmal here, so this seems to be the bread and butter, never seen anything like it. Imagine if they went after the hood areas where the crime rates are 50% higher than the national average. The job market here is: Restaurants and bars, and Temp agencies, Biloxi Mississippi had a better economy and it's a poverty area. The people are implants mostly, very fake, the traffic sucks, the food is meh to really bad, the historic places are mostly fake, they are recreations, or buildings that were brought here from other places and staged up in order to create a faux historical appeal. If you want a night life without a super high crime rate go to Murrells Inlet SC a few hours away, if you want a good economy go almost anywhere else, if you want hospitality go upstate more or the Midwest. There is nothing good that I can say about this place after living here and as soon as I am able to, I will be out of here faster than any other place that I've ever lived in.

The marker reads, "Here stood one of the forts built around New Bern by Union forces after they took the town in March, 1862." Online, there is more information. "Fort Totten was built on the western edge of New Bern in 1862, after occupation of the city by Union forces and prior to the Battle of New Bern. The military installation was named for Joseph Gilbert Totten, a Union general born in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1788. Totten played an active role in the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, and the Civil War. By March 1863 he had been promoted to brigadier general in the regular army. In order to honor Totten for his sixty-two years of service, he was awarded with a brevet promotion to major general by the War Department before he died in April 1864."
