The Union County courthouse was built in the neoclassical style and completed in 1913. The county was named for the old Union church, which was called such because it served Methodist, Baptist, and Presbyterian congregations, creating an ecumenical union. Ironic, since South Carolina was the first state to secede to form the Confederacy.
While the building was closed at 6pm on Friday, there are still a few monuments and historical markers on the grounds that are worth checking out.
This courthouse replaced the one built in 1825 that surprisingly survived the Civil War and was torn down in 1911. This new structure was designed ned by architect Anthony Ten Eyck Brown and constructed by John J. Cain.
There is plenty of free street parking in the evening and at sunset, it's a beautiful building to view.
