Hello hay fever! We had to catch a bus in 5 minutes so I pretty much ran into The Auckland City Pharmacy and explained to the pharmacist that I was in a hurry and need of hay fever medications. Before I could even fish out my wallet from the bag the medication was already in a bag and all they needed was a payment. Such fast and prompt serve is rare in a pharmacy,they usually take a while to get to you. I was beyond impressed.

So maybe you're not A&E bad, but you're not good. This is why Newmarket Day Night Pharmacy is the man. It's open 'til 11pm every night which means hypochondriacs can go and get their mysterious flu medication after dinner and not feel panicked the whole night. Also good for that emergency prescription you need filled because you're leaving the country early the next day. Other than the long opening hours, the pharmacy is pretty much like every other one. Stocks the same things and staff are pretty nice considering they're there late at night dealing with stressed sick people.

The prices are generally not too outrageous for a pharmacy, and the service is quick, although the staff at the front till are really less than friendly, the ones down the back who deal with scripts are really nice. I mean not outright rude or anything, but definitely not friendly, and even to call it polite is being generous. I know it must be boring working as a cashier at a pharmacy, but suck it up. The people you're serving probably also work boring jobs (this pharmacy is in town, you know), and they've probably also got hayfever or bunions or something - that's why they're here. You don't have to sympathise with every single one of them, but yawning and rolling your eyes is not helping anyone. You're not too good for this job - you know how I know? Because it's your job.

I ended up going with the Natio SPF 50 sunscreen as it had been recommended by a friend. The 'screen was regularly priced at $15.00. The customer service here is truly exceptional. When I was taking a gander at all the options, an employee came over to me and asked if I had any questions or needed any help. I told her I was just taking a look and she told me where she would be if I needed help. When I checked out, the woman behind the counter could tell by my American accent that I wasn't local, and she took the time to warn me about the sun here and told me to just make sure to reapply sunscreen when I'm in the sun. The pharmacy is small but still has a great assortment of health and beauty products, and lots of options for vegans! They stock quite a bit of the Natio range and have a wide variety of supplements and vitamins. I'll continue buying my sunscreens and other health/beauty needs from here! Perhaps it has…read moresomething to do with their careful product placement - it's all Clinique gift time at the entrance, and the prescription stuff doesn't start showing up until you right down the back of the store. It's very clever. One of the constant problems with pharmacies is that they try to sell us ordinary stuff at extraordinary prices, and this one is a good case in point. How do they keep going when they charge sometimes up to double for the exact same product you can get ten steps away, across the mall at the supermarket? (It happened to me once with shampoo...never again!). I guess it's the nice makeup brands and pretty extra, like candles, that make this place appealing.

I generally head here before I go to the doctor because the pharmacists are really helpful and often have exactly what I need which means I don't have to pay a hefty doctor's bill. They definitely know their stuff and know what products are best. I was there and an assistant came over within two minutes of me being there and helped me with what I needed. And when you're not feeling too good so good retail therapy often does the trick. Here they have so many amazing perfumes! I could spend hours trying them all out. And also, I buy my makeup from the ladies here too. There's loads of different brands so you can pick and choose from them as you please.
