My excitement at discovering this record store was disappointingly tempered by my actual visit there. I planned a trip to Edinburgh with the intention of going record shopping for a gig on NYE - something i hadnt done for ages - just been buying off Discogs, really. I always peruse the vinyl initially, then like to grab a selection from the person working there (i asked for some recent house/slow house) to actually listen to. He gave me about 9 records, and i asked for a couple more that i had spotted whilst i was listening to those. I didnt find the right tracks for me, and gave them back. He was visibly irked and repeated twice - "You don't want any of those?". He was intent on pinning down exactly what it is that i wanted - in a way that implied i was wasting his time. Pigeonholing your taste is a sure fire way of missing out on great music, and i wasnt demanding an "instant" solution of any kind. He told me to go over and browse a section, so i did, and came back with about twelve sleeves. He said that i had "too many", and they operate a "four at a time" policy. I could totally understand that if the shop was busy, but there were no other customers. He could clearly see me rifling through the section and putting the sleeves to one side - if this was their strict policy, why would he not tell me as i was doing it? He was on the phone constantly, so i guess he had more pressing (pun intended) matters on his mind. He asked which ones out of the selection i was "most likely to like" - if you can even believe that! I kind of laughed and said that it was rather difficult to know, and conceded to just listening to the top four. At this point i was just kind of gutted. There was no way i wanted to leave that store empty-handed. Many times i have bought records that maybe i wouldnt normally either out of some kind of politeness, or just the pleasure of supporting the record stores that do such great work. Im sure other vinyl lovers can understand that feeling. On this occasion though, my mood was deflated to such an extent that i just walked out. This is actually the first time ive written a review like this on the internet - im cautious of contributing to its climate of overall negativity. Its people like that who perpetuate the "record store guy" sterotype, and its tough enough for vinyl businesses without having this pointless "attitude". People can run their business however they want i guess... read more
