It's not more than a 20 minute drive off Interstate 70. The proprietor, Steve, and his friend Vickie were working this evening. They were very friendly and accommodating. I had called earlier in the day to make sure they were open and he gave me detailed directions to find him. The museum is a fairly decent size collection of macabre artifacts and allegedly haunted items. There is a good collection of prison memorabilia. Plenty of explanatory signs for each. If you want to know more, Steve is more than willing to discuss what he knows. I really appreciated his sincerity and passion for The collection is in an older school building turned community center, which frankly was slightly creepy itself. This was just a very fun detour off the highway and well worth the time. Fun fact: you go through Glen Dale, WV to get there: hometown of Brad Paisley and George Brett if that interests you at all.

He'd reach not his pocket and pull out a little block of wood and his knife. With 3 or four cuts, he made a pliers and gave it to me. Ive broken them and lost them over the years. I was skyways impressed with his train collection! All hand carved. Absolutely beautiful. Abd the button house! Amazing! I still hope to get back there some day.

So, a trip to Amish country and then a side trip to the Warther Museum was the ticket. Earnest Warther was a master carver and he carved a wide array of amazing carvings - mostly of trains. The detail in his carvings is incredible. Warther was sel-taught and he actually made some of his own knives because he could not find what he needed in the stores. His craving and craftmanship is amazing. This is a MUST-SEE attraction in the Dover/New Philadelpha area. Allow at least 2 hours (longer if you have time) to thoroughly enjoy this museum.

The tour, escorted by a knowledgeable guide includes boiler room, engine room, crews quarters, galley, dining and living quarters and the pilot house. Visited the Nutcracker Village here this year and loved it! I had been several years ago but there…read moreweren't nearly as many nutcrackers at the time from what I remember. This year we walked up and down the streets where nutcrackers were lined up and it was so fun to look at each one. Along the way we would stop into stores and browse. They also have a market set up with local vendors selling a variety of goods, crafts and yummy eats and drinks! They also had Christmas trees outside with different themes. One benefited the Humane Society and you could write your pets name on a wooden ornament. Very cute. I really recommend you stop by. I think this is a cute activity for families and children or a date night. I will continue to visit!

David, his wife, his many children, and his servants lived in this stone house until 1794, when they fled to avoid David's arrest for his role in the Whiskey Rebellion. Depending on the month, Bradford House offers drop-in and scheduled tours. The drop-in tours are for individuals and small groups and have no admission fee, although donations are appreciated. Group tours should be arranged in advance and do have an admission fee. I read on their website that for groups they offer dining-room parties that serve teas and 18th-century-style foods--sounds fun! My husband and I were walk-ins for a tour. Two docents who were dressed in period clothing walked us through the house: the foyer, parlor, and dining room on the first floor; the beautiful mahogany stairwell and the simpler servants' stairwell; and the sewing room, children's room, master bedroom, and servants' quarters on the top floor. In addition, a docent walked us to the backyard that contained an herb garden, well, and log kitchen cabin (which has occasional hearth-cooking demonstrations). A small gift shop offered merchandise such as books and t-shirts. The docents throughly explained the history of the house, its architecture and renovation, the furniture (which is from the time period but was not owned by the Bradfords), etcetera, and they kindly answered our questions. I did not time our tour, but we were there for probably about one hour. Educational and interesting!

Attended a 1 hr Behind the Scenes of Dinosaur Bones tour advertised to members. $50 per person 10…read morepeople per group. Limited number of tickets. Well worth money spent. Our tour was led by the head pf the department. The breadth of her knowledge of the museum, her predecessors, and collection was impressive. Did you know that England has a copy of our T Rex in their Natural History museum? Dippy's extra bones need a new resting place. Currently they have been resting on this shelf since 1800's. The wood is injuring the bottom of the fossil. (I think dinosaur lovers would donate the $30k to get Dippy's bones a new resting place.) Researchers come to study the collection. Fork lifts are used to transfer the bones from one surface to the next. A local college student found an undiscovered amphibian while searching for fern fossils on FedEx property by Pittsburgh International Airport. Obviously there are the…read more National Road and Zane Grey Museums but also housed in this complex is a museum devoted to local pottery. The museums are operated by the Ohio Historical Connection. The lady at the front desk said you could take a self-guided tour or that they also offered guided tours. We opted for the guided tour and has a very enthusatic young man as our guide. Harry was very knowledgeable about the three museums and gave an excellent - although a bit long - tour of the museums. The National Road section of the museum includes a large diaroma of the national road and the history of the road. There are numerous exhibits including an old Conestoga wagon, various sleighs, and vintage and antique automobils. The Zane Grey part of the museum contains a recreation of his writing studio and a history of his work. Zane Grey wrote all his books in long hand. His wife then typed them on a old typewrtier and supposedly corrected his spelling and grammar while typing. Finally, the local pottery museum has an excellent collection of local and regional pottery. The tour guide gave a good explanation of the processes used in the crafting of pottery. The museum is just off of I-70 at Norwich. Allow 1-2 hours - depending on how much you want to absorb.

This time we checked out an "Experience" from our local library, which allows free admission. This program is great, and allows you to visit Meadowcroft, plus the Heinz History Center, and the Fort Pitt Museum. In the morning, we explored the visitor center and the Native American Village. We liked throwing the Atlatl, which launches big, spear-like darts at a fake deer target to see if you can get them to stick. Afterwards, we left the site to go have lunch about 15 minutes away, and then did a short hike at Cross Creek Lake, where we saw a historic Truss Bridge from 1881. We came back to Meadowcroft, and climbed the steps to the Rock Shelter. We had seen this before, but we were able to experience some excavation work with the staff and scientists. We saw a recent discovery of a chipped flint that was 3,000 years old. Afterwards, we finished exploring the rest of the property. We liked throwing axes, playing double ball, and some other games. The old museum part was slightly disappointing, as it smelled heavily of mold, and I didn't want to stay in the buildings because of the smell. Neat old coaches and wagons in there, but I saw them before, so we were in and out quickly. Lastly, we did the Historic Covered Bridge (looks like it was re-done recently with new wood), the school, church, blacksmith shop and log cabin. All pretty cool to see. The geologist at the rock shelter was very interesting. There was a guest from Toronto who drove up from Wheeling to visit Meadowcroft. The conference center is still under construction. The bathrooms are open. Lots of stalls that are roomy. The gift shop was a great starting and ending point.
