    Nutcrackers displayed for holidays
    Deb B.

Big complex of early settlement fort buildings. You can walk through the buildings and read about life when it was active They have lots of tools and items from historic times. Lovely gift shop. At Christmas there is a whole town effort that is so worth seeing There is a nice park by the fort that is decorated with Nutcrackers and has local vendors of food and crafts.

Located on the grounds of Fort Stuben in Stubenville Ohio, this is a great free event in its third season for families, friends, and even solo. Life size nutcrackers line the park that are made local right in town at Nelson's. Vendors can be found selling goods in German style huts , GIngerbread village located in the visitor center, along with other rare trinkets related to Christmas and a gift shop that sells ornaments that represent smaller replicas, of over 150 handmade Nutcrackers .The event was a pure delight and joyous way to celebrate the holiday season.

I loved it! add the Nutcracker display all around the city and this result in an amazing weekend getaway Fort looks amazing! right out the ones we watched at the movies from western themes.

This review is limited to the Nutcracker Village I visited. Now in its third year the town made a community art project of life sized nutcrackers. They were created and made in Nelson's wood shop of Steubenville. Nelson's also makes the miniature replica ornament nutcrackers for you to purchase at a minimal fee. Set on the grounds of historic Fort Steuben with those buildings in the background you can stroll all around and see 6 feet nutcrackers hand painted and customized to represent some theme or aspect of Steubenville. I was literally blown away by the Nativity creche surrounded by Nutcracker wise men and worshipers. Some of them are the traditional ones you'd see anywhere where others have that unique feel to them that brings out the kid in you when you see the ideas the businesses have come up with. Off by the main stage there's one devoted to the famous "rat pack" including Sammy Davis Jr.,Joey Bishop, Frank Sinatra, and Steubenville's own Dean Martin. They had tributes to "It's a wonderful life" movie, Scarlett O'Hara, and even Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof! That's really unique and I was shooting photos everywhere. I did check and they are not mobile nutcrackers. I also loved seeing the bride. John Glenn, and even Mother Teresa. I made it a point to stop in the visitor's center and pick up a guide and to my surprise they have more "hidden" about the town. It's an easy walk but you'll find the likes of Clark Kent, Scrooge, Leonardo Da Vinci, and the Phantom of the Opera if you follow the map about town. The guide gives a complete list of Nutcrackers and their sponsors. On weekends the hold an Advent market with free trolley rides and hayrides. There's also a petting zoo for children. Even the visitor's center had inside a Christmas wonderland of nostalgia.I learned they even have a model train village on Sats. Best of all everything is free! There are donation boxes where you can put in any amount you wish. It's great to go during the week to avoid the crowds but they do have a small parking lot out front. This is an easy drive from Pittsburgh if you want to see something really unique. I'm sure it must be beautiful at night and makes great family fun for the holiday season.

I have always been fascinated by old historic villages and visited quite a few of them. Fort Suben quickly stole my heart as soon as I stepped inside and has become my second favorite village. (With old Bedford village being my first, and Hale village in ohio my third.) We did not do a guided tour when we came, due to covid-19. Instead we showed ourself around. The village is set up to show life in the late 1780's. Each cabin has it's own theme and story to tell its history. The most unique aspect is the life like wax statues portraying workers, soilders and Indians. It gave the village a very realistic (and almost eerie) feel. I would suggest visiting the fort around the holidays. They do a beautiful job decorating and put up a huge nutcracker display. The display stretches from the fort to the main street a few blocks up. You can plan to spend an hour just walking around to see them all in addition to the time spent at the fort. In the park, they also set up food and retail booths from all of the little shops in the town. It's a great way to sample everything and a fun time for people of all ages! If your traveling from Pittsburgh, it's about an hour drive to Fort Stuben. You could easily turn it into a day trip and experience all the hidden charm stubenville has to offer. Here's some of my favorite spots nearby: Biscuit World-Stop for breakfast or brunch! Just five minutes down the street from the fort in West Virgina. Beatty park- Bring your frisbee to play free frisbee golf and your walking shoes to hike the easy trails full of historic buildings that used to be part of the street car tracks. They also have newer playgrounds. Leonardo's coffehouse- Take a step back in time to the Renaissnace while you enjoy a gourmet coffee. It's also connected to the popcorn shop nextdoor. Downtown Bakery- they sell all the homemade pastries and cakes you could ever want! There is plenty more little shops, restuarants, murals and statues to see while browsing the main street! You may just find a new favorite!

This time we checked out an "Experience" from our local library, which allows free admission. This program is great, and allows you to visit Meadowcroft, plus the Heinz History Center, and the Fort Pitt Museum. In the morning, we explored the visitor center and the Native American Village. We liked throwing the Atlatl, which launches big, spear-like darts at a fake deer target to see if you can get them to stick. Afterwards, we left the site to go have lunch about 15 minutes away, and then did a short hike at Cross Creek Lake, where we saw a historic Truss Bridge from 1881. We came back to Meadowcroft, and climbed the steps to the Rock Shelter. We had seen this before, but we were able to experience some excavation work with the staff and scientists. We saw a recent discovery of a chipped flint that was 3,000 years old. Afterwards, we finished exploring the rest of the property. We liked throwing axes, playing double ball, and some other games. The old museum part was slightly disappointing, as it smelled heavily of mold, and I didn't want to stay in the buildings because of the smell. Neat old coaches and wagons in there, but I saw them before, so we were in and out quickly. Lastly, we did the Historic Covered Bridge (looks like it was re-done recently with new wood), the school, church, blacksmith shop and log cabin. All pretty cool to see. Overall, a nice day here at Meadowcroft ... Cheers!

The docents were so friendly and knowledgeable. The entire museum was interesting with the highlight being the Dean Martin Room, since he is from here. I was particularly interested in the Paddlewheels, as my great great grandfather used to build those boats to go up and down the Ohio River. By the way, if you get a chance, definitely do the tour of historical homes. Some are more restored than others, but a couple of them look like museums inside themselves. The Historical Association is a very cool place for a small town. They were welcoming and inviting and they even served cookies to visitors that day. Nice touch!

For any Dean Martin fans, they even had a Dean Martin room. Thanks for making the time memorable, and enlightening my knowledge of another great small town in Ohio.
