Uncle's was the worst hair cutting experience I've ever had. Don't get me wrong, the look of the place was awesome and you could tell he put a lot of work into the design of the place. He also seemed really good at what he does and gave me a great haircut. All in all, everything was 5 star except for "Uncle Nick".
I honestly have no idea what I did to set off the guy but he basically threw me out of the shop. I called today to make an appointment for times within the next week (anytime after 4 this week or next week) and he texted me to come in today, awesome. He seemed really into the place and explained how he came to get the barn wood and the wall things which was also cool but when I asked him about where he got the things, when he made the business, about his tour out west with as a private barber, and his career in California he became real irritated. At one point in the conversation he told me he's back here running his business alone because he's not going to let unqualified barbers run it (thats not how you get such high reviews) until the business is established to the point where he returns to a house out west. All fine except he started being condescending here by asking my age (19), telling me kids my age don't understand what owning a business means and how you can't just leave it set somewhere, "explaining" that we don't think in advance instead of planning out what to do. Thats fine I can tell this guy may be having a problem with me although I'm only trying to ask him questions because I'm curious on this business. So I ask him some about where he went to school, how he liked California, how he got into haircutting ( he started at 6 ) and how he got interested in it, how he's planning on legitimizing the business so he can move out to California, just trying to make conversation with the guy. Uncle Nick must've thought that these questions were all too personal and that I must be judging his life decisions or telling him how to run a business because at this point he makes it clear that this is no way to talk to a barber and I shouldn't tell him how to run a barbershop that he's very proud in and to give him his money and get out. Sorry Nick I have no idea where that came from, I was genuinely interested in the "history" you sport so much; not at all did I ever have the idea to tell you how to run your business.
After apologizing and paying I tried to think of what I said that set him off. I came to the conclusion that Uncle Nick was either having a shit day, way too cocky to have questions asked on what he's planning on doing, or simply very sensitive on anything that has to do with more than just his store's appearance and the history of barber shops. Im only 19 years old Nick and Im sorry for offending you and your cool business; I don't know the first thing about running a barber shop but I feel in order to run any business you shouldn't be an asshole.
Thanks buddy won't be back,
