Lake Marie

Reedsport, Or. Wow. What a great little get away. Would be perfect except this is a sand dune mecca, and the droning distant noise from the various sand vehicles without mufflers is constant. The Yurts are really an exercise in glamping. Everything you might want, except the TV's are worthless. Bring all your own bedding and toiletries too. The bed situation is much better than a cot, and the rubber covered mattress was a bit strange. I slept well however. The camp ground hosts apparently make side money selling firewood. This makes it easy to have all the wood you might need for your fire pit. Our view of the lake was astounding. The walk around the lake is beautiful. The rainbow trout in the lake are about ten inches long. They weren't hitting on flies or lures but liked cheese, power eggs and marshmallows. I wasn't there to bait fish, just catch and release so my haul for the weekend was zero. Hot water showers!! Bring your own towels. Secure door locks. Easy walk to the yurts.

Great place to visit! Pay for the tour, it's worth it. What. Great view and great stories. Amazing slice of history!

Ok for a quick stop, we only stopped at the lighthouse which is still operating. There is a whale watching site across the street with information on their growth and migration. Go further north to see the spectacular Heceta Lighthouse!!!

Everything is green and wonderful. Best place to VanCamp with the lighthouse to the south.

Informative Tour and Museum My son , his girlfriend , and I did the lighthouse tour and museum . It is $8 a person and I recommend it . The tour guide was very informative about the history and things I didn't know about like the Japanese sending Balloon Bombs to the U.S. during WW II . The lighthouse glass has a red signal and the story of why is cool . The climb is not hard . The museum has a very good display of life in the Coast Guard at this station with lots of things to look at . It is definitely worth going to see . The town of Reedsport is a neat little town and access to the beach is not far . The parking at the beach is $5 and we were told by the guide to make sure you pay because they will write you a ticket quickly . The beach was cool and the waves were coming in pretty hard that day due to a storm off the coast .

The glass that helps the light be seen out to sea.

This lighthouse, museum, gift shop and snack bar were a wonderful part of our Oregon adventure. Mike was our guide and had lots of interesting facts to share in a comfortable, easy to listen to manner. The museum was well stocked with artifacts and information. The gift shop had many, many things to purchase for gifts and memories, including chocolates from Portland. My husband enjoyed a delicious hot mocha. Next day, we rode up and got an amazing clam chowder in a sour dough bread bowl and a hot chai with almond milk. Delicious!

Deluxe yurt. Slept 7. Barbecue, microwave, fridge, bathroom.... Not quite camping

We had a LOVELY night here in December and vowed to come back for a 'real' camping trip. The yurt was so much fun for our family.... Bathroom with toilet and shower (byo towels and soap etc.) Kitchen was equipped with sink, fridge and microwave making this a true glamping trip. We didn't hang out at the campground for long but if we had, we might have used the covered grill, fire pit, or just enjoyed the view of the river. There was even a TV!! (We didn't try it out) LOTS to do in the area including lighthouse tour, atving (seasonal) or, if you're like my kids, running up and down sand dunes. If you're someone who is organized enough to book campgrounds 6+ months in advance, consider this spot as I'm sure it gets popular!

The Park includes an excellent campground, lighthouse, and museum. The lighthouse tour we had was very fun and interesting. The guide had more information than I can remember, but it was all good. We learned about the surrounding area as we saw it from the perch where the lighthouse stands. Then we viewed it from the outside as we learned about its history. (Even though it stands on very solid rock, the federal government, in their special and incompetent way, made them dig a place for a concrete foundation. We went inside and climbed the stairs to the light at the top. Fascinating! The museum was also very interesting with its history of the area and its re-creation of what the early quarters were for the lighthouse and life-saving staff.

Not exactly a 'lighthouse on a bluff', but fun nonetheless!

This lighthouse is rather unique, being that it is located inland from a large jetty and beach area, so driving to the lighthouse feels as if you are heading the wrong way. Fortunately, the lighthouse is up no a bluff, overlooking the sanddune recreation area. Plenty of parking is available; we backed our RV into one of the spots and enjoyed a fantastic view out over the ocean, while enjoying our lunch. The lighthouse is surrounded by government structures, so it is not as picturesque as some of the other coastal lighthouses. From what I understood, they were not offering lighthouse tours during our visit, due to Covid. The museum was open, however, and had some great details about the history of the area. We really enjoyed the gift shop. Right around the corner is a State Park campground, as well as a number of recreational areas. The site is off the main highway, so plan to explore town along the way and find some delicious fresh seafood just off the boats. The highlight of our visit was getting to watch the Coast Guard helicopter practice sea rescues - a number of jumpers were dropping into the surf and getting hoisted back onboard; looked like a lively day for the new recruits!

Gary was a wonderful tour guide and so friendly. He was very informative, sharing historic stories and processes of the early years. The tour takes about 40 minutes and the cost is $8 which includes a self-guided tour of the lighthouse museum and sleeping quarters. Although the tour guides do not expect tips, they definitely deserve them. The time they put in and the knowledge they share is very valuable and should be appreciated. Our guide even offered to take a photo of us in front of the lighthouse which made for a nice souvenir. Thank you, Gary! We thoroughly enjoyed it!

Deluxe Yurt... #20
Mark S.

We spent a night at one of the deluxe yurts... it's really cool! Take a look at my photos to get the best idea... the yurt is like deluxe camping. It's also like a simple motel room, but you bring the sleeping bags or blankets and all your "camping" needs. You'll sleep with the sounds of the Umpqua fog horn off in the distance! The yurt is really nice and has lots of quality touches. It comes with cool outside areas too. You can cookout, there was a Weber gas grill at our yurt and a simple fire ring on the ground. No old school phone or TV, but you do get a DVD player and screen. Cell signal was good. The Reedsport Safeway is your friend. Total bill for one night, $88 It was very clean and well kept. The people who run the campsite are very pro. Be sure to see the lighthouse, night time is great! Also don't miss The Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area, which a short drive away, and, the Elkton Oregon Butterfly Pavilion (during Summer) which is over east of the yurts, near I-5. Both are way cool mannnnn!

Beautiful campground. Excellent spots for restrooms and showers. Very friendly and helpful hosts.

The tour is worth what you pay. Our guide was really knowledgeable and showed us a lot of great history. The lighthouse is beautiful, especially at dusk. The museum is nice and the kids enjoyed seeing the different themed rooms. Staff is really personable and friendly. We will be back.

HELLO! THIS REVIEW WILL CONTAIN DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO FIND THE SECRET HINSDALE GARDEN…read moreAKA RHODODENDRON GARDEN. We were only able to find this place after having help from a local and had driven for miles already. If you make a right turn out of the elk viewing area a few hundred yards down the road on the left is an unmarked wooden gate. Park on the right side of the road and cross the highway and you should see benches and trees, maybe flowers just past the gate. This is how you will know that you are in the right place and not someone's property. Also, you can find directions to this garden via google maps, but it will ONLY show up if you google 48043 State Highway 38. It will NOT show up if you google Hinsdale Garden or even Hinsdale Rhododendron Garden. Pictures are included to help identify the area. The garden itself is not too big, but nice and there are bathrooms (porda-potties) if needed. My family just went there and it was completely private yet beautiful since there were still trees in bloom. I hope this helps anyone else trying to find the garden! :)

This location is absolutely stunning in the springtime, when the 700+ varieties of rhododendrons,…read moreazaleas, and camillias are in full bloom. The history of this spectacular creation is also fascinating. At present it is only open a few days a year for tours -- and spring 2019 is past -- but is very visible from the highway and you can still park at the gate and take a walking tour. Since 1994 it has been owned by BLM, but is in the process of being restored and maintained in partnership with the "Friends of Hinsdale Garden." I have a group of friends who do hiking trips together every few years, and this year we picked…read moreMorrisons Rogue River hike with support from guides on rafts. Booking the trip was relatively straightforward, but Morrisons highly encouraged us to do trip insurance because they don't offer refunds, which should've been the first red flag. Before I go too far, I do want to give a huge shout out to our guides Drew, Adam, and Johnny. They were amazing, and if I were rating just them, this review would be 5++ stars. They were friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, and genuinely cared about us and our hike. The rest of the Morrison's staff...not so much. There was an active wildfire in the area before we started the hike. We talked to Morrison's several times in the days leading up to the trip (before we flew out) and even asked about rebooking the trip for a different time, when the forest in the area wasn't on fire. We were assured that even though they were planning a few modifications to our itinerary (i.e. at least one day of rafting instead of hiking), they were confident that it would be a wonderful trip. Fast forward to the end of day 2 of our trip...and they had to cancel the rest of the 4-day hike due to safety concerns and, ultimately, a mandatory evacuation. To be clear, I'm not upset that we were pulled out of the woods, as that was an obvious safety decision. I'm mad because we specifically asked about rebooking for different dates and were told no. Morrison's got us back to their main lodge the following morning, at which point they considered themselves done with us. There was no refund, no help finding rooms for the night, and the last lodge we were in literally wouldn't even let us use the bathroom in the hour we were waiting for vans to get us back to safety. Morrison's did at least send us all an official email about the trip cancellation so that we could share that with our travel insurance (if we'd purchased it) to try to get a refund, but that was about it. Morrisons also made the guides tell us, rather than having anyone higher up in the company talk to us. From what we can tell, they also didn't do anything to help their guides (e.g. helping them find lodging) once the trip was canceled. I will also add that I'm vegetarian, and although there was a lot of very tasty vegetarian food available, vegetarian protein was extremely scarce. For dinner the two nights we hiked (~9 mi on day 1 and 15 mi on day 2), there was no source of vegetarian protein for me to eat. (The gluten free and dairy free people fared much better.) It would've been so easy to roast a portobello mushroom the way they roasted salmon, or to do some kind of meat substitute when they did ribs (they did have meat substitute at the lunches, and eggs or veggie patties at breakfast). I had brought some protein powder with me, but not enough to make up for dinners without protein. My friends ended up giving me the protein bars they'd brought for themselves to try to make up for the dinners. To Morrison's: please consider all macronutrients (carbs, fat, AND protein) when planning meals for your guests! Overall, I would absolutely go back to the river with any of the guides, but I'll never use Morrisons again, and I recommend that you don't either.

Great time with my family. The guide was excellent and we had a blast. We did the afternoon 1/2…read morerafting trip and are definitely coming back to make this annual event. Dan was an excellent guide!
