Subaru - My 2014 Crosstrek purchased used from Subaru Montreal in the Chisos Mountains of Big Bend National Park, TX just north of the Mexican border

I bought my first car (a 2014 base model Crosstrek) from this dealership a year ago, and the folks…read moreat Subaru Montreal, particularly the salesperson Ilan Rubier and the finance woman Lucie, made it an easy, and even fun experience. I came to Subaru Montreal well-researched on the Crosstrek, and even though I was able to find the car cheaper elsewhere, I wanted to try my hand at this dealership because of the better reviews they had than others. Ilan was honest, knowledgeable, and didn't pressure me at all. I was able to negotiate a good price on an excellent used car, and Subaru Montreal was transparent and forthcoming enough that I was able to know the history of the vehicle and previous owner, and could buy without any real concern. A month later, I embarked on a 19,305 km roadtrip through western Canada, the U.S. (the South, the pacific coast, and mid-west), and even parts of Mexico. The car held up like a dream, and despite driving through rugged mountain scapes, desert, snow, and L.A. traffic, I didn't even have so much as a flat tire. It even served as a comfortable place to sleep with enough space to set up a bed in the back for those rainier/colder nights when camping wouldn't cut it. As others have pointed out, the nature of the car sales business can foster a dishonest and selfish culture (capitalism, amirite?), but the staff at Subaru Montreal have somehow found way to enjoy good sales while being able to sleep easy at night knowing they aren't swindling less auto-savvy customers. I, too, sleep easy knowing where to go for my next car purchase. Thanks, Subaru Montreal!

SCAM ARTISTS I moved from the US and imported my Hyundai…read more To make it street legal for Canada, I had to have a Hyundai dealership make some changes - adding daytime running lights for instance. I went to Hyundai Gabriel St. Jacques and they rolled the switch in the computer from US to CA and installed the daytime running lights for $600. When I picked up my car and left I noticed that a) the temperature display on the dashboard for external temperature no longer worked - it cycled up and down and was reading things like 176F when it was 30F out and b) when I first drove at night I was shocked to find that my headlights were very dim. Neither of these issues were stopping me from life so I didn't worry about it so much. A year later my car has a check engine light. It's the second time this has happened. I have a code reader that says it's an emissions problem and needs a smoke test. I decided to book with Hyundai Gabriel since the thermometer and headlights issues were still there, it was their work that caused those issues and so maybe in addition to the engine issue I could have them fix those. Took the car in, told them the exact code that the code reader gave me as well as the fact that the car needs a smoke test. "I have to plug it into my reader" (and charge $155/hr min). I get a call back several hours later saying: sure enough the car needs a smoke test. Fine - do it. At this point they also tell me that the thermometer on the car is damaged and needs to be replaced. I was quoted something like $150 + labor to have it done. I said "no thank you - it's not that important." They also claimed that the thermometer was damaged in an accident and referenced the hole in my bumper. The hole in my bumper came from 2020 when I hit a raccoon. The thermometer worked totally fine from 2020-2024 when Hyundai Gabriel "fixed" the car for Canada at which point it promptly stopped working. With regards to the headlights I was told that the issue is that the relay for the daytime running lights replaced my regular headlights so now I just have daytime running lights and high beams, no regular headlights. I asked if I could replace the bulbs with something more powerful and they gave me "um, yeah, I guess you could do that, you'd have to be careful about the wattage and stuff." So I asked for part numbers/bulb numbers or any other information with which I could fix this myself since they insisted they could not. "Google it." Thanks. While my car is in their shop I also got a call that was so sketchy I thought it was a scam asking if they could buy my car and help me buy a new one. No. Fix the car. So the smoke test and diagnostics are complete and cost me $360 after tax which is outrageous since we shouldn't have had to do the diagnostics to begin with. To fix the issue they need to order a part and replace it, it will be $800 for the part and 3 hours of labor min. but also now their rate has changed from $155/hr to $160. I schedule the appointment. When I drive away, now instead of cycling up and down and displaying 176F when it's 30F the thermometer just reads "-----" so I assumed they had unplugged it or something. Fine. I'm happy with this fix. I show up for my appointment and at no point when I'm checking in does anyone say anything about the thermometer. I leave my car with them all day. I get another call from the sketchy dude trying to give me a great deal on a new car and we will surely buy yours from you at a good price! No. Fix the car. I go back to pick up the car and am given a bill for $1,340. I paid it because that's kind of what I expected with taxes for the $800 part and increased price on labor. As I'm walking out, I read through the bill and see that there is a charge for $278 for parts and labor to replace the thermometer. I immediately talked to the woman at reception and said "Hey, I didn't say to replace this, I said leave it. I don't want to pay $300 for a thermometer. That's insane." Everyone had "already left for the day" so I have to get a call back. Fine. I get it my car and sure enough the thermometer works. Still in F not C which - whatever but I would have figured when the car was switched to Canada mode that would've changed. I get a call back. The guy apologizes and says it had said "replace parts" plural on the work order so he assumed I wanted to replace the thermometer too. I said "No, we talked about this. You quoted me, I said that's a stupid price to pay for a thermometer. I'm not doing that." "Ok my mistake." Yes. Your mistake. Refund me. "Bring your car back and we will take it off and refund you." Um, no. It was you guys who broke the thing in the first place, you guys who screwed up my headlights and can't fix them. Your mechanics are not touching my car ever again. And I am not wasting more of my time off work to have you screw up my car even more by taking something off it. You should refund me. They refused. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
