This mural is very realistic and lifelike. It was painted by Brandan "Bmike" Odumsin 2011 on the side of the Community Book Center, overlooking a parking lot. The piece depicts an unidentifiable person handing a young black girl getting a book with "Ujamma" on it spine. It is against a blue abstract background and even the power meters on the side of the building is incorporated into the mural. There is an abstract yellow circle with symbols that I do not know what they mean, but I am sure means something.
The mural overlooks the parking lot of the neighboring church so, if you want to park and get out real quick and take a look, that should not be an issue. There is also free street parking available as well. You probably would not even have to get out of your vehicle if you did not want to.
Ujamma means 'extended family' or 'brotherhood' in Swahili and is the belief that a person becomes a person through the people or community. It is known as the fourth Kwanzaa principle.
This artist does great work and this mural is no exception. I really like this mural. It has a positive vibe and almost looks like a photo.
Well, now it is time for my standard mural disclaimer. As with most murals I have reviewed, this is not a very long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. You should consider planning out additional stops or stopping here on your way to somewhere else, to maximize your time and trip. read more
