The acoustics are phenomenal with the dome ceiling and stone walls, and the seating is accessible with a large octagonal ground floor and wrap around balcony. You're always right up in the action and though the building is massive, they certainly did a fantastic job maintaining the intimate vibe. I mean, Victorian Gothic architecture is all the rage these days for true expert concert goers... With all of the nightclub-come-churches that try unsuccessfully to pull this dual purpose venue thing off, Union Chapel does so flawlessly, allowing people to participate in worship of their choice (whether it be religion or rock) on a weekly basis.

Monday athletics during the winter and swimming at Tottenham during the summer Tuesday Boy Scouts, Wednesday Choir practice and evening service,Friday choir practice.Saturday afternoon fortnightly country walks Sunday 2 services and Sunday school. the choir consisted of some 45 all male. All boys had Christmas prizes (presents) The organist and choir master ( I believe was Proff Boddington) had been there for 52 years but resigned just before my family moved away. It all very fantastic and had a great effect on the rest of my life

The Old Church in Stoke Newington is a beautiful ancient building surrounded by a small church yard…read moreand neighbouring Clissold Park. It doesn't get more idyllic than that. I think it is still used as a church, but I have experienced it as an arts venue. From February until 20 March visitors are treated to a very special experience as part of BREATHE Festival. Output Arts created a windharp that has been placed in the bell tower of the bigger church across the road (aptly named Church Street!). The harp reacts to the wind and the resulting sound fills the ancient walls. An experience not to be missed. I 'll definitely be back for at least one of the concerts directly inspired by the windharp. During the day visitors can experience a light art installation triggered by the sound. You don't want to leave and your mind drifts off to the soothing drone of the windharp. A bit like Olafur Eliasson at the Tate, without the sun. Supervised meditation sessions are scheduled for noon throughout the festival. Wish I lived closer - addicted already.

Due to its size...the church is in size maybe a little bit bigger than a chapel...and obviously type of the venue any show turns into a magical and beautifully intimate experience. Most recently I went to see Bishi's show that was extremely well executed and left me wanting more.

History The nave was built in 1880-1 and the sanctuary in 1893-4 by the prolific church architect George Frederick Bodley (1827-1907) and Thomas Garner, with whom he had a 28-year professional partnership. A planned tower was never built. St Michael's subsumed the parish of All Saints in the 1950s, and since 2003 has been part of a team ministry with St Pancras Old Church, St Mary's Somers Town and St Paul's Camden Square. The church The church is orientated north-south, with the liturgical west end facing the road. The church is built of yellow stock brick with stone dressings in the Decorated Gothic style. Both the west window and the clerestory windows over the aisles have delicate geometric tracery and have recently been restored. Inside, the stone-lined interior consists of a nave of 5 bays, which draws the eye to the large sanctuary: Bodley did not include a chancel arch in the scheme, so the nave and sanctuary form a single, large space. The height of the nave is emphasised by the fact that the floor is lower than the street outside. There is a small, stone-vaulted chapel to the north. The interior has decorative stencilling, but is need of repair. Fittings and furnishings are relatively limited, but include the original altar of 1880, and a selection of statues, some in the pre-Raphaelite style, though that of St George dates from 1939; an attractive coloured pulpit; a marble altar and Easter Sepulchre in the north chapel; and a brass to Edward Bainbridge Reynolds, incumbent, who died in 1907. The church has a flourishing congregation in the Anglo-Catholic tradition, and the adjacent centre provides a range of outreach services for the local community.
