Such a wonderful, ancient and beautiful looking church, in the heart of Enfield Town, behind the…read moremarket place. Although no one knows exactly how old it is, estimates range from 800 to 1000 years. There are so many interesting things to see when you are inside. The earliest parts of the church date from the 13th century and include the south wall with its lancet-shaped unglazed window. Two stained glass windows are definitely worth a look. The first is in memory of Thomas Roos, First Earl of Rutland, and dates from 1531. His coat of arms is encircled by the blue ribbon of the garter. The second window depicts the nuns of Holywell, weeping for their founder, Sir Thomas Lovell. One of the great features of the church is the organ, and its carved wooden organ case, created in 1752/3. I've often walked pass on a Saturday morning and heard someone practising. It's a wonderful sound and makes my weekend shopping trip a little more bearable.
