Caught my first movie ("Nosferatu") in Portugal, which happened to be at the UCI Cinemas, located in the El Corte Inglés shopping center in Lisbon. The cinema--I believe there's 12 or 14 screens?--is conveniently located on the first level of El Corte (unlike many other multi-level shopping malls which tend to place their cinemas on the top level, next to the food court; which, just so happens to be where this food court is also located, on the first level), and makes it super convenient to catch the metro Blue or Red lines, which access right into the mall. It's all very modern and state-of-the-art, with ticket kiosks just outside the open entryway (if you choose that form of payment), or you can simply go inside and stand in the refreshment queue and pay there. (I did the latter since I was getting popcorn. Can't do a movie without popcorn!) I speak very, very little Portuguese, but had no problems whatsoever since everyone working seemed to speak English very well. The refreshment stand looked like any other stand you'd find back in the States, selling the same sort of movie-house goodies and drinks. All seats in this UCI are "reserved," so I got to choose my seat from a display screen, showing what was available and already taken. All of the screening rooms are clearly identified for easy locating. My particular film played in the "XL" theater (identified for its large screen and immersive sound-system), and was pretty easy to find my reserved seat. (Seats were comfortable; everything looked clean and modern.) The large-sized screen and excellent sound-system wholly enhanced the movie experience. Unlike, for example, Spain, which dubs its films into Spanish; here in Portugal, films are shown in their language of origin and subtitled into Portuguese (which, of course, made it very easy for me; unfortunately, some of this film's dialog was in Romanian, which was subtitled into Portuguese but not English. But, that's the way the ball bounces!) After the film, there wasn't any indication where to exit; however, I figured out (by watching someone else leave) one simply exits where they entered! (An incoming crowd was also gathered there, but it wasn't chaotic to get out. There was way more chaos in the food court! Lol!!) All-in-all, it was a 5-star experience! (Movie gets 5-stars, too.) :D read more
