The Kauri is one of the oldest old man pubs going around, you couldn't write a better cast of characters - at 5pm on a balmy Sunday evening the tables outside are littered with 40 to 50-year old boozers and malcontents, there's an ancient man with crutches, an old Italian bloke smoking cheroots, women in Adidas jackets with scraggly hair, fat blokes in footy jumpers, someone's got their Rascal electric cart parked up against the tiles, a Commodore with both mirrors missing hugs the gutter, it goes on and on. People watching is off the chart. Inside we meet Sue, from Pyrmont, who's brought her 74-year old friend Miriam down for her birthday. Yelp Elite Lizzie K is part of the house band here and she's singing Amy Winehouse's "Rehab", the old ducks are up and dancing, they grab my friend off his stool for a waltz, I eat a $12 chicken parmy and - this is unbelievable - beers are only $3 during happy hour, which seems to go forever, and $4 normally. I paid $9 for a Peroni in the city last week. I almost vomited on my own shoes when the guy told me the price. But here! Well, I can do that for less than a lobster, and enjoy it much more. This is the sort of place you'll meet people, real people, salt of the earth, no pretensions, up for a chat, who'll think nothing about buying you a drink because that's what people did back then and didn't want anything out of it.

We were captivated by the sight of a roasting pig right outside the front door, with a sign next to it saying "Free Sausage Sizzle. $3 Schooners." Say wha?!?? Be still, my bargain-seeking, mystery-meat-loving heart! We proceeded to the bar to procure our $3 schooners from the friendly barmaid. Decor inside was unpretentious, no-frills, old school pub. Just how a good pub should be. We went for a wander and there's a roof garden and function room upstairs, and a restaurant that's closed on Sunday. A quick peek at the menu confirmed my assumption: the dishes and prices were respectively predictable and reasonable, in keeping with the decor. We finagled a seat outside. An older chap addressed the sausage sizzle queue: "Buns already cut and buttered." After procuring sausages, I went back to my table where yet another older chap was addressing the BF as he collected our empty glasses. "Save room for the pig, love" he said sweetly as I walked by, nodding at my sausage-laden plate. What a legend! There is nothing I love more in the world than pig, in all forms of its porky glory. But pig on a spit? With amazing crispy crackling? Outside a dive bar on an lazy Sunday afternoon? Accompanied with amazing salads and bread? And $3 schooners? For FREE, just for being in the pub? And AFTER free sausages three hours before??? Sometimes life is amazing. And the places like the Kauri Foreshore make it so.

The Baron - who runs the joint - is a dead-set barman for life. Formerly the entrepreneur who ran the slightly illegal Beer Baron delivery service, the Baron has now gone legit, and opened The Dock, an unassuming small bar in Redfern. The Baron wears suspenders, and often has a tea towel slung across his shoulder. He could be straight from the 1940s, andlooks like a younger version of Al Swearengen from Deadwood, except maybe not so scary or terrifyingly charismatic. Then there's the Baroness, she's gorgeous and friendly, and everyone is greeted upon arrival. Actually sometimes there are different Baronesses working there so maybe the term is inaccurate. Whatever. But enough about the people. What about the place? It's dark and a little shabby, and doesn't seem to be trying too hard to be hipster. The popcorn is free, and they've just started offering dumplings and other small comestibles. The cocktails ($10 on Sundays, Mondays & Tuesdays) are not always mixed with precision, but the servings are generous, and the cocktails on offer are classics. The beer is cheap, and they serve Skittlebrau (yep, that's beer and skittles, as in Homer Simpson's fantasty... it's disturbing and amazing, all at once). Live music has started appearing (think bluegrass and jazz). It gets super crowded on Fridays and Saturdays here, we prefer weeknights.

It's as sweet as it's non-alcoholic brethren but after a few of them you'll begin to feel it. The restaurant part was surprisingly amazing. The food would come up from a basement kitchen. It had the FOUR Fs - Fast, Fresh and Full of Flavour. A great selection of fried seafoods and a creamy goat curry to die for. Our host was on top of everything. If you dropped a chopstick he'd be there with a clean one before you picked the dropped one off of the floor. While your surrounds aren't authenticly Vietnamese, the food was the closest thing I've had since visiting Vietnam. While I try and avoid tacky looking Asian restaurants, eating authentic Vietnamese in a pub/TAB was just a little weird and a bit too far removed. I'd definitely be back though.
