I would not recommend U-Turn for Christ to anyone who does not have some relationship with God and knowledge of His Holy Word.
U-Turn is a slave labor camp....NOTHING MORE.
"Pastor" Gerry Brown only stops by the ranch when he needs his car or truck washed.
His son Daniel is the biggest spoiled brat I have ever laid eyes on. Daniel speaks of the great and awesome God he serves. I would bet dollars against doughnuts he would curse the day he was born and God if all his money, home and cars were taken away from him in an instant. His dad has given him everything and he has never worked a day in his life. Daniel is a 20 something punk kid.
Daniel treats the free labor force at his illegal construction site as if they are slaves. He does not even provide ice water in the blistering heat of God forsaken Perris, California.
I have read "Pastor" Gerry's book, U-Turn for Christ and from what I read, "Pastor" Gerry has no idea what it is to lose everything due to drug addiction. I mean drug addicts do not tow their water craft to the river and travel up and down it for days at a time smoking pot and ingesting crystal meth. They simply do not have the means.
The "overseers" and "head master" at U-Turn are not Biblically qualified, much less clinically.
"Head Master" is not even a Biblical title.
And if you look up the qualifications for "Overseer" in I Timothy 3:1, the first thing an overseer must have is, his heart set on being one.
U-Turn forces its overseers to task, and if they do not, they will find themselves digging a 5x5x5 hole!
Personally, I think the current "head master" is probably a prison gang "drop out" hiding from those seeking to do him harm.
The food is absolutely rancid horrible, outdated, prepared by people without food handler cards, and completely unsanitary. I cannot count the number of times I had the runs from eating the food.
The urinals in the bunk house do not work, and the p-traps leak urine on the floor, the cleaning supplies are very minimal (if any at all) the place stinks like pig guano.
If the humane society were to ever visit U-Turn, Perris, they would shut down their "agriculture ministry," due to the fact they mistreat the animals by not feeding them right and not providing them with adequate water. There are many holding pens that do not have running water, and on Sunday, the animals do not get fed or watered at all.
If you get a chance to go their annual pig roast, I would suggest you do not, they feed their swine dry dog food, horse pellets, and whatever torn bags of feed for whatever kind of animal the local feed store has donated.
If one is raising swine for slaughter to consume, it must be fed good food (preferably corn) not crap and sour slop.
They use terms such as "Your on U-Turn time" "Ministry doesn't have a time clock" "Ministry doesn't need to eat" "You guys are getting way too comfortable."
One of the "overseers" while I was there was so phony, and I am sure he is still the same. His name is Ernie, he is as phony as Joan Rivers' face. It was really funny to watch him in action because he was all holy and reverent during prayer and crosses assembly, but away from it all he was the same mean spirited person he always has been. I wanted to smash him so many times but my faith in The Lord and prayer helped me not to.
If you step out of line you will find yourself digging a 5x5x5 hole in the dark beginning at 9:30 p.m.
I went along with the program and graduated, but with God as my witness I will NEVER, as long as I live, step foot into a Calvary Chapel congregation EVER!
The "Christians" at Calvary Chapel have a pecking order beginning with the "Senior Pastor" which, by the way, is referring to oneself as Jesus, and filtering its way down to the lowly "scum" of the participants of U-Turn.
This is not Christian behavior and beating people over the head with The Bible is certainly not the way to get them to know Jesus (especially for those who have never known Him!)
Unfortunately, Pastor Chuck Smith has gone on before, but had he been informed of the real truth and going's on at U-Turn he would have disassociated himself and Calvary Chapel with it all together, but as so many who graduate the program, they most likely have never followed up and reported them, so it will be business as usual at U-Turn.
It was good riddance for me leaving the U-Turn ranch and my association with Calvary Chapel. I learned more about relying upon The Lord to see me through the times I believed to be difficult. My application of the scripture was not by any teaching of Calvary Chapel, but only of my faith in God's teaching through His Word.
U-Turn is very selective on what scripture they teach and how they wish one to be led to Christ, and you can best believe it is not through love and compassion, but more through fear and intimidation.
The program is named U-Turn for Christ, but know this and take it to heart: Christ left the U-Turn ranch in Perris, Ca. a long time ago. read more
