What can you say about a chamber of commerce? Well, this one is located right downtown where "it…read moreis all happening". Actually, there is nothing happening in Lompoc - but that's the draw. I like to go to places where nothing is happening. You know, dogs humping in the street, people asleep on benches and traffic so sparse you could lay down in the middle of the road for a tan. Lompoc has murals on the buildings that are interesting to see. Sofie and I enjoyed walking around and looking at them. Did you know Lompoc was founded by a bunch of women who wanted to start a colony of people who would be free of alcohol? It didn't work though... where there are women, there will be men and where there are men... well, you will have to investigate the murals to get the whole story. When I took a photo of the IOOF sign, the owner of the store said, "Hey! I can take that down and sell it to you if you want...". I'd really like to have that sign, but I'm not sure where I would put it on the estate. You really must have a two story buildinjg for an IOOF sign.

Unfortunately, some of locations are closed due to the Pandemic such as the classic Greek Revival Lompoc History Museum which was the former city library as well as the "not listed in the walk" iconic, classic Streamline Art Deco Mike's Bar that's on Ocean Avenue just east of H Street. Takes about an hour leisurely walking past many murals, al fresco paintings with no stops inside noted sites or lunching in such noted restaurants like Sissy's where a hot mushroom salad and coconut cream pie awaits. Great way to intimately get to know a small, military base town surrounded by famous wineries in Santa Barbara County. 4- stars

Established as the 11th mission in the chain, it is by far one of my top favorites, probably second to Santa Barbara, really! It's absolutely beautiful, as you will soon read. It was actually destroyed by an earthquake in 1812 and was rebuilt at its current location. Today, you can explore over 20 reconstructed buildings, including the church, workshops, living quarters, and blacksmith shop, that reflect the daily life of both the people who lived and worked here. The park is open almost every day from 9 AM to 5 PM, and it's perfect for both self-guided and docent-led tours. The Visitor Center is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 AM to 4 PM and provides helpful information and exhibits to get you started. I highly recommend a docent-led tour, the docents are so incredibly knowledgeable, and there's so much to learn about this historic site. On Demonstration Days, which take place several times a year, the mission hosts hands-on living history events, including blacksmithing, weaving, and candle-making. I look forward to visiting during Demonstration Days. I seriously can't wait to get back here. The grounds are large, rural, and so peaceful. There's a nearly three-mile trail loop. Parking is $6 per vehicle and $5 for seniors. I saw several dogs, but it does get very hot, and they are only allowed on the designated trails, not in the buildings, for obvious reasons. There are tons of animals, too. There were horses, steers, chickens, and more. Do not miss La Tienda, the mission's gift shop, where you can pick up local crafts, mission-themed books, and souvenirs. The local crafts are beautiful. I highly recommend this site for a half- or full-day visit! Make sure to set aside enough time for this beautiful gem. The drive alone is so beautiful and serene.

I recommend checking out the visitor center before doing the trails because you can get good information as well as all the different trails in the given map. Parking - I paid $6 to park on their private lot. The money goes to help them maintain the state park but if you don't want to pay I saw many people parking right outside on the street across and walking down.

If you decide to go in person, make sure to arrive early or be prepared for a long wait. Some of the staff speak in a condescending tone, which is disappointing coming from professionals in social services. On one occasion, I was questioned about why I hadn't come in earlier to follow up on my benefits. I explained that the online portal showed my paperwork had been received and was pending review, so I was simply following the instructions and being patient. Instead of acknowledging that, the worker responded dismissively -- as if my explanation wasn't valid. Later, I found out my paperwork had actually been overlooked and left pending for months, meaning the portal was inaccurate. Rather than taking accountability, I was reprimanded for not contacting them sooner. It's frustrating to be blamed for their oversight, especially when you're doing your part and following the system as instructed.
