Located at Woodside ferry terminal is a German U-Boat, sunk in 1945, it had remained on the sea bed for nearly half a century when, in 1993, it was salvaged (reportedly by treasure hunters) and its story retold. The U boat is divided into four sections which came as a surprise to me when I first visited and actually provoked an initial disappointment; I had thought that visitors could wander through the depths of the sub and truly imagine life on board, obviously, as I discovered the history behind the vessel: its purpose; its attack by depth chargers; its sinking and wreckage, I began to appreciate much more the quality and quantity of what had been preserved, and there is a good deal. What's more, the story is fascinating and told in a way that is easily accessible and appealing to everybody; there are informative interactive exhibitions and audiovisual displays which engage with young and older visitors, and guided tours are available too; the guides are very knowledgeable and always invite questions. U-Boat story is a remarkable concept and, to my knowledge, a very unique exhibition, at least in the North West, and it provides a rare glimpse into life under the sea during World War II; fascinating. read more
