Wildkräutersalat mit spanischem Rinderschinken, Haselnuss und Papaya What an adventure for my taste buds!

The staff is used to explaining how to pronounce Txokoa. By now I've forgotten. Were I to live in Berlin I'd learn pretty quickly though, because I might just clinch a dukedom here. The second room is like the living room of an Altbau: high ceilings, stucco around the edges of the ceiling. The decor is simple and relaxing, rounded off with international music I would characterize as... romantic yet not too mellow? I know nothing about wine, but my dad spoiled me (it's a special kind of hell) so the waitress recommended a red wine for me: Azabache Crianza 2011. D.O. Rioja; solid. Wild herb salad with Spanish cured beef, hazelnut and Papapa - this was a special from the board. All the elements worked together so unexpectedly well. Txistorra Sausage, Potatoes & Kumquats Stew - I'm not a fan of potatoes, so I'm not sure why I ordered this. I suppose I expected the sausage to dominate the dish, but alas I had to concentrate on the delicious stew itself because they were rather bland. 24h slow cooked Suckling Pork Belly with Mushrooms & Green Apples - no one prepares pork belly like in Hong Kong, I'm sorry. This tapas was still amazing in its own way though. Caramelized Brioche with Bourbon Barrique Icecream & Kalamansi - how have I missed the existence of caramelized brioche all this time? Why are people still eating creme brûlée?! €6-13 per tapas. Glass of wine about €6. It's funny. I love the, say, Chinese, way of serving food: lots of dishes all in the middle of a huge table and everyone has a bit of everything. Tapas are the complete opposite: each plate is so small and so good there cannot possibly be any sharing. Yet Txokoa has managed to sway me.

    Vennison with bacon wrapped potatoes.

Classic Wrangelkiez - ok prices, bad everything else. And dirty. So, so filthy. Cleaning bathrooms…read moreis apparently not cool in Berlin anymore. We had a reservation, but (unsurprisingly) the place was still empty at 8pm on a Thursday. We ordered some wine which was well-priced and so-so, but the food was truly disgusting. Fishy, old-tasting, nasty shrimp. Overcooked meats floating in thick, greasy sauces. Tacky, cafeteria-like plating...just slop, basically. Luckily we had only started with a few tapas, so we escaped without much damage. Only positive: Walking distance from Bar Raval, which saved our night.

5 stars for not being perfect…read more Yes, the furniture is a bit shabby. Yes, the avocado dip for the chips has slightly too much garlic in it. Yes, you sometimes have to wait a bit before the waiter notices that you want to order another beer but all this unimportant shortcomings somehow manage to sum together into an extremely inviting, relaxed an cosy location, a location where: - you can spend a perfectly relaxed evening chatting with your friends after a stressful day - you order warm meals of the day (listed on the wall) or simple but tasty tapas (on the menu) - a trumpeter comes around to enhance the atmosphere with live sound - the staff is friendly and unobtrusive - the spirit of Kreuzberg mixes up with the feeling of Spanish siesta P.S. Opening hours of this café are a secret to me. Once I tried to visit it on Friday at half past one p.m. and it was closed but then the same evening around 8 p.m. it was open
