Post House Inn - The Prestonfield

My husband and I recently stayed at the Post Inn with our children for our anniversary and had a…read morewonderful tome. This was our first trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake, and we found the location to be quiet with an enchanting small town feel. The location of the Post Inn is ideal: just a skip away from the main street, but nestled among other houses to remind you of a home away from home. There's also a small private lot for your cars which is nice. The interior design is also nice, boasting classic elements that reiterate the building's history while providing modern updates to keep things current and not dated. Upon arrival -- that just so happened to be a rainy day -- we were greeted by the inn owners who were both enjoyable and extremely pleasant. We stayed in the Connell Garden Suite on the first floor that has a king size bed, bathroom with a frameless glass shower and Jets and soaking tub, and sunken living space (with a sofa bed) that opens up to the pool area. This was the perfect space for our family as it allowed me and my husband to have a bit of privacy when our kiddos went to sleep. Another wonderful thing about this suite is the endless amount of drawer space that help ensured we didn't live out of our suitcases. For the multiple nights we were there, we looked forward to waking up to the smell off breakfast being prepared. The inn keepers did a wonderful job of whipping up such tasty options every single day. I don't ever recall eating anything bad, or not wanting seconds. As much as we enjoyed our time here -- and would definitely go back in a heartbeat -- I have to deduct a star for the lack of turndown service, specifically, checking trash levels in the room. My husband and I make it a point to stay in a B&B during one of our annual vacations and are well aware that people do things differently. While we have been to places that have a sign in the room saying you only get TK or X amount of new towels and someone to tidy the room, for the price we paid to stay in our suite, if would've been nice if something like this was included -- or, at the very least, considered. Given we are a party of four -- with two people in our group being small children -- our trash started to accumulate, to the point my husband had to seek out an inn keeper to ask where he could discard it. Another not so wonderful moment from our stay were the ants we noticed on the vanity in the bathroom, near the patio door, and even in the main area while eating breakfast. Granted, the season had changed to spring when we went (bugs are expected), we made sure every suitcase was zipped to prevent friends from coming home. And, speaking of friends, because of the Inn's age -- and hardwood floors -- be prepared to hear anyone above you walking, rolling a suitcase, opening and slamming drawers, and even talking. Thankfully, this wasn't an issue during the bulk of our stay, but I can imagine someone getting annoyed over time. (That's why we choose the bottom floor when traveling with our kids.) Overall, the Post Inn is beautiful, warm, and pleasant and made for a great anniversary trip.

Arrived to hotel with my wife for her birthday and our 4 month old daughter. Was not let into the…read morehotel because apparently there was fine print somewhere saying that children are not allowed. They refused giving a refund because I didn't read the fine print... Obviously if it was clear during the booking process that kids are not allowed we wouldn't have booked it. No one wants to pay $350+ tax for a room and then not have an opportunity to stay there. Even booking.com agreed with me and tried requesting the owner to make a refund. But the owner decided to keep the extra $$. At first the owner tried to come up with some sort of unsafe pool for kids and insurance nonsense, but then it was clear during the conversation that the walls are so thin that they can't insure privacy of others with anyone more than whispering. This was also confirmed by other guests saying they were treated like children being forced to keep their voices low even during normal conversations. Even though it is quite a beautiful house if you don't want to risk your stay - just book a proper hotel.

There's also a common area on the top floor with a selection of movies, books, and magazines! The room was very clean: ours had a pull out bed and a regular bed. Room has a Keurig, a fridge with water and juice, and the bathroom has nice smelling, natural soaps and shampoo. Breakfast is nice as well! There is a selection of bread, croissants, tea biscuits, etc. There are also gluten free options which is good. There's also plates of fresh fruit as well as cheese, sliced meats, yogurt, and granola bars. Very close to shops and restaurants, they are within a 10 minute walking distance. Main complaint is not enough parking. While you can fit all the cars onto the property, if you are boxed in by other cars then you will need to ask the person to move their cars so you can leave.

The breakfast buffet was really good, a lot of selection, and she brought us coffee and treats mid-day as we were getting ready! Decor is a not really my style, but appropriate. A fantastic experience!

However the pictures looked lovely so we took a chance and when we arrived, the place looked gorgeous, even nicer than the pictures. Everything was tastefully decorated. The location was the best as it was a one minute walk to the shops of Niagara on the Lake and a 4 minute walk to the clock tower. The host was pleasant and the breakfast was delicious! The smoked salmon benedict and the croissants are very memorable and delicious. I highly recommend a visit to this B&B if you are in the area.

That's how fondly we think of our past experiences here. Janet brings an artist's touch to everything she does -- from the exquisite decorating and small, fine touches of milled soaps, fresh flowers and stacks of soft towels, to the gourmet breakfasts she cooks every morning. Like so many people, we live hectic lives, and Regent Garden Mews is a true respite from the madness. Just as importantly, Janet is a kind and gracious host, always greeting us at the door as if she couldn't wait to see us. Over the years, she has become our friend. In my book, there is no higher praise. Connie Schultz and Sherrod Brown
