I've done a few charters before--you know the kind, where you feel like the captain and mate are phoning it in or secretly laughing. This was not the case with The Starship! Bill and Jimmy made you feel like you were good friends going out for a fishing trip. Bill seemed to know exactly where the fish were, while Jimmy made sure you caught them. I can't help but smile when I think about our trip.

We arrived at Raged Rock Marina and the charter was ready waiting for us. The captain, Bill, and…read moreguide, James, we're both very welcoming and helpful the entire time. The bot had a nice indoor area with a few seating options as well as a bathroom. They gave us a quick safety rundown and we were off. While Bill was driving the boat to our first spot James gave us a rundown and said we would start of bottom fishing for sea bass and then make our way to some striper fishing. We made it to our first spot and dropped our lines. Some of us had never been deep sea fishing so James helped us to make sure we were doing it correctly. It started off slow but towards the end of the trip we had to hide in the boat cabin to bait the hooks! All kidding aside, each time we pulled up our line and we're missing bait, James would practically run to add more bait to the line so we got in all the fishing we could. James helped land all of our catches and even filleted everything for us on the way back to shore. Bill was very knowledgeable about exactly where to go and where the fish were hiding. The whole trip was so much fun. Bill and James helped make it a great trip, offering to take pictures for us, letting us ride up at the top of the boat and answering any questions we had. I can't wait to come back and fish with them again!

I had a nice time but realized the fishing rods were exactly heavy and it wasn't as relaxing as I would have imagined it to be. The fishing process was complicated, you had to drop your line down at the exact same time as others if you're late then you get all tangled up. You don't get to fish the entire time you're on the boat, you switch off. Summary: Rain boots are a must because water gets into the boat and once your feet is soaked it becomes uncomfortable. I didn't dress properly so I was cold the entire time. If you plan on going on a trip, day trips are best because fishing in the dark just feels as if you are on a fishing boat trying to make a living.

My wife booked a fishing trip with Captain Peter and FlylightCharters for my Father-in-law, my two…read moresons (ages 7 and 9), and me for our birthdays. By far one of the better private charters I have taken. Capt. Peter gave more than great directions on finding his dock and boat and a very thorough overview of all the safety equipment before we set out. Seas were calm and the weather cool for a July Sunday. Capt Peter made sure everyone was safe when on the boat and it was moving, was very knowledgeable about the long-Island sound and various landmarks during our charter. We followed the birds but the usual spot was quite crowded with a lot of other boats so Peter took us to a much less crowded spot and we got into hitting strippers and blues pretty good. What was the best thing for me was how patient and attentive Capt. Peter was to my two boys. I have been on many other charters before where the Capt. And crew are not nearly as good or concerned about the kids. But Capt. Peter answered every question they had (which were sometimes asked multiple times), he was great helping them fish so my father-in-law an I could man our own rods, and was great at teaching my boys how to cast, jig and reel. With a little instruction from Capt. Peter, my 9 year old was even able to land his first striper completely unassisted! I can't tell you how happy and proud this made my son. While we did not round out the day with any keepers, we definitely caught a nice showing of fish. When we got back to the dock and were heading to the car, my boys were like "Dad, how soon can we come back and fish with him again?". I would definitely recommend Capt. Peter and FlylightCharters to anyone, especially if you have kids. A much better experience than the crowded party boats, much more fun, and a very, very reasonable price!

Last week a family member and I brought our kids (3 10-year olds and a 13 year old) on a 5 hour trip and we caught over 25 stripers (5 keepers, a lot over slot), our kids were completely exhausted by hour 4 and most had passed out in the cabin.
