ASTD is a leading professional association for anyone involved in the field of workplace learning…read moreand performance. The Golden Gate chapter has been in existence for over 60 years, though I've only been involved for the past 4. Like any good professional organization, it's an excellent place to network with other professionals in all areas of the field, from internal trainers and training managers, to product vendors, to independent consultants. The chapter meets monthly for an informative dinner program and also hosts several additional events every year, including 1-4 day programs on entering the field and developing your skills, formal networking programs, and leadership development. Special interest groups provide more focused support for job-seekers, technology and e-learning specialists, and managers. A unique feature of the Golden Gate Chapter is the Community Outreach Program, whereby chapter members volunteer to provide customized training programs to local non-profit organizations. Joining the chapter was one of the smartest things I've done professionally. I got my current job as a direct result of the experience I gained on a Community Outreach project, and the friends and colleagues I've established continue to be an incredible source of guidance, support, and inspiration. Serving on the Board of Directors, which all members are encouraged to consider, has been a valuable opportunity for me to gain leadership and collaborative experience.

OVERALL REVIEW OF 14 HILLS…read more 14 Hills is a literary magazine that publishes poetry, fiction, nonfiction and short plays. But the journal is far from ordinary. The semi-annual publication is definitely something to talk about inside and outside the academy. As the writing found in its pages is outspoken and frank, something in every issue successfully presents the provocative. From front to back, every issue is a collection of diverse of literary works, as diverse as the vibrant city of San Francisco itself, the community in which it was founded. I am glad to say that it cannot be said that the magazine is specifically aligned with or conforming to any class or school of urbane aesthetics, which is a very good thing for the greater public. For in the near future, there will be no doubt that the postmodern literary works in America and 14 Hills will be running parallel with one another, if not becoming identical in the 21st Century. And I have come to this conclusion in my opinion upon a close reading of several issues, as I have observed that the writing that is called forth and submitted, requested and delivered, sought and found is independent and honest; the work in 14 Hills is far from being genteel, manicured, and dreary. The literature of 14 Hills is perhaps best explained to be governed by a simple commandment: Every work shall be vigorous, resounding, and, of course, have a lot heart. This journal is definitely for the independent writer who is writing something new. Thus, this journal is undeniably enough for the independent reader who is seeking the work that is progressive in its offerings by emerging writers, as well as by established writers. 14 Hills is the journal that is and looks to remain independent, innovative, and experimental. And it is not for the lighthearted, but it is best suited for those with a heavy heart. R. R. REESE

Inside we find stories of how people process irreparable loss and change. Not surprising, he visits new voices, notably Emma Schoenberg, recently out of high school, in the guise of a pigeon shattered like a glass bottle in her debut poem called "Pigeons," and emerging novelist Lauren Hamlin in the short piece, "Domestic Tornados," in which his strike is ever imminent. However, in the feature interview with Alice LaPlante, we find Raven also teases veteran storytellers with such headaches as finding the form fit to tell the story effectively. We are treated to a unique presentation in the excerpt from LaPlante's upcoming novel, Do Not Go Gentle, about a murderess without memory of the act. The whole issue delights us with the adroit skill of its writers, most beyond the first blush of the newly published. We see Raven fly in twists and turns through each of them.

I began working with Linden when she did a developmental edit for my very first book. Her…read moresuggestions guided me into making critical revisions that I am convinced made all the difference in a book that became the first in a series (as of 2020--7 books) that launched my career as a successful author. After that first experience with Linden, I've collaborated with her through her excellent writing coach program for 6 more books in my Rosemont series, 2 stand-alone murder mysteries, the first book in a new series that has launched to stunning editorial and reader reviews, and a Christmas novella that was adapted as a Hallmark Channel Christmas movie in 2019. Linden is creative, critical, encouraging, and uncompromising. Whether I need a nudge or an about-face, Linden provides insightful, careful, and implementable guidance--all in an encouraging way. Does she hold my feet to the fire, insisting that I don't stop until something is as good as it can be? Yes. Are my books markedly better under her tutelage? Without question. My author career has been successful enough to allow me to leave my day job as an attorney to focus exclusively on my writing. Working with Linden has been a key component in my achieving this dream.

For so long, I felt helpless watching her struggle with what happened to her, seeing her doubt herself and wondering if anyone would ever truly listen. Then you came into our lives, and everything changed. From our very first meeting, you treated her with such respect and dignity. You listened to her story - really listened - and never once made her feel like she had to prove herself to you. As a mother, seeing someone believe in my child the way you did was everything. Watching you fight so fiercely for her rights and her truth last week gave both of us hope that we haven't had during some really dark moments over the past few years. You didn't just handle her case - you cared about her as a person, and that made all the difference. This settlement isn't just about money - it's about my daughter getting the acknowledgment she needed to start truly healing. Thank you, Sandy, for giving my daughter her voice back and for fighting like hell to make sure justice was done. You've been a blessing to our family.
