I came across tutors on wheels through my friend who had a tutor come to her home. My friend told me about how great the tutor was for her child and how convenient the scheduling was. My son, Max, who was in the 5th grade at the time, needed help in school. His teachers at school recommended I get some tutoring at home for Max. I had private tutors before but never have I had such an experience with a tutor. I've been with tutors on wheels for almost a year now and I can gladly say the tutors at this learning center went above and beyond for Max. I was impressed to learn that the tutor was an actual teacher. She was teaching at a public school in Queens for a number of years. She was professional, caring, and helpful. She first tested him and told me that he needed help with his reading comprehension. I knew Max had some trouble in his ELA class, I never would have taught max had such a
specific problem. So Max's tutor told me she would be spending their
sessions on mostly reading comprehension. She told me how his understanding of his reading hurt his performance all around. He would loose motivation because reading was a struggle for him. So when his class began reading books, and he couldn't keep up, it became evident of how and why. This worried me, but his tutor reassured me how she will do what she can and told me of how she had students with similar issues that she was tutoring. The sessions were one-on-one and I had the option to choose what the schedule will be. Max's tutor worked around my work schedule and was able to meet even when I had some irregular days because of my work schedule. I was displeased at first because I wanted max to get more general tutoring all around. Needless to say, at Max's next parent teacher conference, his teachers told me of how he really came around. His reading skill greatly improved and his grades no longer worried me. I was so proud of what Max has accomplished with the help of his tutor. He began talking more about the
books he was reading in school and sharing his ideas of what he thought the stories he read was about.
I do want to point out that this was a process and it took some time to get
there. Max's tutor really pushed him to work harder. He struggled and
complained at first, but over time he began to get used to his tutoring
sessions. Max's tutor was unlike his other tutors in how she managed to
develop a relationship with him and push him academically. For Max, she was the guidance he needed. I observed their sessions and saw how she was able to keep him focused with a mix of positive reinforcement, challenging his critical thinking, and of course taking breaks after doing large amounts of writing. She showed him how to become an active reader, and she introduced short stories in his sessions that he actually was interested in reading. I think the way she sparked Max's interest in his books was the way she really helped him improve his reading. read more
