Beautiful castle in Turku. Definitely worth checking it out. It's definitely an all day activity if you want to see everything in depth though. We made it into an afternoon only thing and definitely didn't have time to see everything. Some of the stairs are super steep and narrow if that's a concern. There are so many things to see in this castle, you could easily spend hours there. I learned a lot about local history, the people that once lived in the castle, as well as the history of Finland from the various exhibits. They also had a free mobile audio tour available in various languages. Definitely worth a visit! read more

I would not have thought this castle would be so stunning. A might white castle, so beautiful to look at ... white and innocent as it seems from the outside, but who can imagine the lavish lifestyle at the court, the treachery and the intrigues or the gloomy, miserable fates of the prisoners down inside the dungeon pits? As one of Finland's most important sights, Turku Castle was probably built in 1280. Since it got extended in the 16th century, you will get the chance to visit a medieval part and one in Renaissance style. Being heavily destroyed in 1941, Finland took the effort to restore it completely. That is why it is very easy to walk around inside as long as stairs are no big problem for you. Inside the medieval part make sure to visit the chapel and to pick up one of the files explaining all wood carved statues. I really loved St. George fighting the dragon and St. Martin sharing his coat. The dungeon with prison cells and pits will surely leave no one untouched. I was so glad that there were no torture instruments on display, though I am pretty sure there had been some. You will need at least 2 hours for visiting all accessible parts - maybe even more if you get absorbed by the hundreds and thousands of artifacts. There is even a room where children can dress like a princess or a knight ... the costumes were superb and the coat of chain mail weighs a ton ;oD! In the end, you may have a look around at the museum shop or have something to eat at the restaurant - even here all staff members are dressed in medieval clothes to make it a perfect illusion for the visitors. read more

The Turku Castle is fantastic! It was definitely the highlight of my visit. From outside it seems fairly humble, although still cool. Its walls are simple, white, washed out, worn looking. And then you step inside....and the hours just disappear. It's definitely worth paying the fee to spend time wandering and learning. There are different parts of the castle from different eras - Medieval, Renaissance, and the separate Bailey - and they are all super cool. There's an exhibition explaining the history of the castle, and it's extremely impressive, spanning hundreds and hundreds of years. This is a true castle, not a pretty palace, but a castle which has been fought over and conquered time after time. The Finns, the Swedes, the Danes, and the Russians have all fought over it and inhabited the castle at some point. You can watch a timelapse video showing construction and how the castle has changed over time, which is very interesting. And there's even a room where you can dress up in real chainmali and armour - definitely a highlight! Three hours were gone before we knew it. read more
