Hadn't been at turners for 6 years. Friday afternoon is fried ham biscuit day. Tasted just like last time. Got 4 to go. Highly recommend

It's been a few years in the making but I thought it's about time to pay tribute to the folks who…read moremake Fulks Run Grocery and Turner Hams happen. Couldn't find a nicer bunch of people to do business with and the products they sell are absolutely top notch. They first caught my attention after seeing an article in Food&Wine magazine saying they had the best country ham sandwich in Virginia, that's not a small feat in a state known for hams, but they make it old school which is hard to find anymore. The simplicity of their sandwich is almost silly, but I'll guarantee you that you'll never taste anything better if you're a lover of ham prepared in these traditional ways. The ham is soaked to lessen the saltiness and then lightly floured and fried on a flat top which they serve on a very simple bun. It's easy to overlook the time and effort they put into making their country ham but it truly does shine in this sandwich, there are very few places left that cure ham the way that Turner does. The catch is that they only make these mini-masterpieces on Fridays during the summer and into the Fall, so plan your trip to pass by them on a Friday to experience these beautiful nuggets of ham history! Legend has it that their homemade pimento cheese is the ultimate addition to the ham sandwich, the lady that makes it was on vacation last week when I came back, but there's no doubt that I'll go for it my next visit

I had a car issue during my visit and they were so helpful and kind. The fried pork sandwich did not disappoint, not to mention all the other goodies they have inside to buy, including a deli counter! If you're in town (it's pretty close to Luray!) please don't miss out on this little gem!

We stumbled upon this permanent roadside market when traveling between central Virginia and…read moreClarksburg, West Virginia -- and while trying to avoid roads that would put us into harm's way given the winter weather advisory for the mountains of WV. Snow of up in 8" in April?! There were a lot of cars in the small parking lot -- which is always a good sign. There was also a sign for a deli which gave us hope that we could pick up a late lunch. Better than that, they had a grill! We ordered a quick lunch -- one bacon cheeseburger with lettuce and tomato, one chili cheese hot dog, one bag of Walnut Creek cheddar and sour cream potato chips (2.25 oz), and a bottle of Kutztown birch beer (24 oz) -- all for $11 something, including tax but before tip. There are two community tables, one of which we shared with Ernie, a local, who gave us great advice on which roads to avoid for our onward travels. The shop is worthy of a longer browse. They seem to have a bit of everything. For instance, fruits and vegetables, refrigerator cases with milk, homemade macaroni or tuna salads, fresh deli items, cast iron frying pans, hardware store items, phone charging plugs, greeting cards, and so much more. Staff were also very friendly. We ordered at the counter, and our hot items were brought to our table. We self-selected the soda and chips from the floor. You need to pay only when it's time to leave.

We get fresh locally grown vegetables and also the occasional fried ham sandwich. Everyone who works here is super friendly and helpful. This is definitely the go-to spot in the Lost River Valley for those of us who live here and also the adventurers who come out for the wild and wonderful Bed-and-Breakfast experiences.
