Approx 2.5 hours south of Atlanta, lies the speedtrap of a city called Ashburn. About 6 years ago, some friends and I were traveling to the SuperBowl and got pulled over in this stretch of I-75S and she was able to convince the officer we weren't speeding, this has stuck with me for all these years, so imagine my disappointment when this past May, I was pulled over for doing 91 in a 70. I told the officer that I wasnt speeding, and since Georgia has imposed the new super speeder fine if caught going more than 20+ over the posted speed limits, I knew that I would be fighting this ticket. Last week, I received my letter to appear before the judge in my case. I called the Turner County Offices, because the letter stated that if you chose to plead Not Guilty, u must appear in court....I'm thinkin...drive 2.5 hours to say Not Guitly.....I have to be able to do that over the phone. NOT!!! Not only did the letter say it, but the clerk that answered the phone told me....if u dont appear, a bench warrant will be issued for your arrest and your license will be suspeneded. SHEESH! So I get to court today to find out, that if you plead not guilty, you will have to appear on TWO other occassions, one to get on the court calender, and then for the trial, if the officer doesnt show up for the first trial, the case will be re-set and thus you may have to go a third time. We were not allowed to enter the courtroom until right at 9am...and not one minute before....all men were required to tuck their shirts into thier pants, no white tees or tee shirts with pictures, sayins or other graphics are allowed...no ahtlethic gear, no mini skirts or sweatpants....Telephones are not allowed...not..make sure your phone is off...but NOT ALLOWED...as in the metal detector guy tells u to take it back to your car, or turn it over to the bailiff to retievie after court. After the calender is called, the soliciter will meet with you and offer to reduce the fine, and poliety remind you that if you plan to plead Not Guilty, you will be required to come back to court at least twice again. In the end, i went with the reduced fine and 60 days to pay it off....instead of committing myself to the 2.5 hour drive at least twice more....My fine was reduced from $440 to $282,....overall the entire court session took less than 20 minutes....I just don't see the sense in blockin off at least 5 hours of driving time for two more court apperances...at least two more....and IMO this is what little towns like this expect....u either are gonna pay the fine...or get frustrated...and pay the fine! Funny thing....the judge showed up the same time as me...he had on a seersucker suit with a pink shirt/tie combo....and got upset when the courtroom wouldnt audibly say the Pledge of Alligeance with him. A quick google search of "Ashburn, GA" or "Turner County, GA" is all you need to see that this place is horrid. Capitalizing on out-of-towners, mostly those of us from Florida who have the unfortunate luck of having no other direct route back to our state than I-75. A little advice: when you get pulled over (not if but when), DON'T JUST PAY THE TICKET AND FORGET ABOUT IT! Either hire a lawyer in Ashburn or go back to court. Despite GA's laws supposedly not requiring convictions (and yes, paying it online means a conviction) to be sent back to the home state, they will still be notified and your insurance will still increase dramatically. I would recommend travelers avoid this town and putting money into their economy. They are getting plenty from pulling over Floridians and upping their speeds 3 or 4 miles for that extra $200 fine. Go elsewhere for your gas and food. PS knowitall comments ("Don't speed and you won't get tickets, etc") are futile. I wasn't the one who got a ticket. Still doesn't mean I'm okay with it. read more

I cant believe this is happening in America! In old days people who had authority used to extort money from common people, this is exactly what the cops do here. I was driving at 75 and cops pulled me over, told me I was driving at 91. I told them that i was on cruise control and there is no way I was drving at 91. He got me a ticket and also told me that when I saw his flashing lights, i changed the lane to goto the shoulder while a trailer was behind me and gave me a second ticket for that. If they could get more money out of me by lying that I was smoking weed or talking on a phone while f**- g a horse, they would. Thats how the county makes money and it is a shame. The most IMPOSSIBLE speed trap to pay of all time. I have been on the phone with three different courts and it has been impossible to pay my traffic citation. They put me on hold for HOURS and refused to put me through to anyone who can help. Literally the worst service of ALL time. Avoid Ashburn at all costs ($$$). read more

Personal experience narrated below. The court incident was not at all a pleasant one: I was driving from Tampa to Atlanta on one July 2016 afternoon and was pulled over for speeding on I-75. I use radar detector and my radar went off with a police siren sound, indicating that a Laser (LIDAR) device is used to clock speed. By the time the laser device is detected, the speed is already clocked but regardless, I slowed down. I was expecting a cop to show up from somewhere and that is what exactly happened. A black (Mustang probably) sheriff car took the ramp to merge onto I-75 traffic. The cop was probably somewhere on the overpass bridge of one of the exit to set the trap. He showed up behind my car and on goes the lights and I knew I was going to get my first ever speeding ticket. Naturally I pulled over and hid my radar detector even though I knew there isn't any law in GA against using them. The cop came up and asked for my DL and registration, which I provided. He said I was going on 89 (limit is 75 mph) and then suddenly slowed down. He took the DL and registration and few minutes later came back with the citation, which I signed to acknowledge of receiving it. I do not want to go into the argument whether I was actually going on 89 or slower because there is no way to prove that. But after reaching Atlanta, I googled up and I realize that Turner county is quite strict with speeding citations and as it was above 85, I should expect $200 GA super speeder if I pay the fines without appealing it or something. I took free initial consultation from one of the local attorney firm and was told that they may be able to reduce the speed reporting from 89 to 84, which could prevent points, $200 GA super speeder fine and no reporting on my DL to FL DMV. They would charge $250 for that and I do not mind paying that but I thought I could make appeal myself. I would have to end up driving 4 hours to turner county court and make appeal in person but I was sure that since it was my first offence, I would end up preventing $200 GA super speeder and points reported on my DL. I looked up the website provided on the citation and I saw that I can request a court date myself, which I did. I also called a customer service number on the citation and they requested a date for me as well. However, there was no confirmation via email or mail regarding request being made. So after couple of weeks, I called the court and was told that a request is made on my behalf and the 45 day deadline to pay the citation does not apply when a court date is requested and that I should expect something from the court around November or December (2016). I waited till December and got nothing, and there comes January and I tried calling the court but was never able to actually speak to someone. I thought like all government activities, court must be running behind on schedule but I still tried to call the court, unable to reach someone. In February end, I receive the letter from my FL DMV that my license will be revoked/suspended as of March 16, 2017. I was taken aback and again tried calling court. Fortunately, I was able to speak to someone and the person said the only way to request court date is to write an email and no requests are made online and I told my situation and I was asked if there is any proof that i requested the date online. I did not have any proof except the call on which i was told that request is made. I called customer service number and they confirmed that there was a time where court date was requested online but that process no longer exists. I am pretty sure the date was requested but something was probably messed up in the system after the court's process change and probably lost my request or that the response was sent to my old mailing address. Fyi, I forwarded my mail to new address, so i should have got that mail to new address if it was ever received. I ended up paying the ticket in-spite of this mess because I do not want my license to be suspened and there is nothing i can do now as the deadline for requesting court date has already passed long time ago. I did send an email to the court explaining my situation but have not got any response yet. I am not sure I will ever get any response!!. The payment fines are accepted by the court but still have not contacted my FL DMV to remove suspension request. I am trying to clean up the mess and trying to work with FL DMV to clear the suspension even after i have paid fines. I should have hired attorney and paid $250 but instead i tried to use the facilities provided by the court which caused the mess. I ended up paying fines, will most probably have points on my DL and my insurance will go up because of this mess. PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU ARE DEALING WITH STATE COURT OF TURNER COUNTY. I had a similar situation with the previous review, only I was NOT going 89 in 70 MPH limit. I was doing 80 with my cruise control set on my brand new minivan. The officer, Billy Caton, claimed that my cruise control, digital AND analog speedometers were not accurate and that the hills (if you can call them that this far south in Georgia) caused fluctuations in the speed. I know there was someone going faster behind me. Just before the officer pulled me over, I had changed lanes to allow the faster, but smaller, car to pass. I believe either his radar picked up that car or he didn't even use it. He never showed me the radar and I asked he had a picture of my van doing the speed and he said Georgia doesn't do that but he SAW me. Well, I SAW my speedometer and the faster car. He also made a point of asking me to leave my vehicle next to a busy highway to give me my ticket - no doubt to avoid my husband intervening from the backseat. Now I'm being slapped with a Super Speeder ticket for going over 85 on a two lane highway when I was NOT going that fast. Reading the previous review, I believe it is a conspiracy within the government in this county to target interstate traffic and slap them with fines knowing they won't have the time or money to return to fight the ticket. Next time I'll spend the extra money to fly to Orlando for vacation rather than deal with the corruption in this area's government. read more
