Comprising a large part of the old San Agustin Temple complex, the House (or Center) of the Arts is…read moreone of the most beautiful and interesting places--well, in my opinion anyway--in the city, but definitely my favorite. Built over three hundred years ago, this part of the complex was originally a convent and has had a colorful history, serving later as a prison, and after that a school where my mother would eventually go. Now it's a cultural and administrative center, offering classes in arts and crafts, spaces for young musicians to gather and practice, constantly changing exhibits to explore, and a gallery that gives local artists an opportunity to sell their work. Add the magnificent building, the beautiful courtyard, and the awesome cafe, and you'll understand why I think it's an amazing place.
Because most of it is public, you are basically free to roam the halls and explore, though of course you will see guards. It is definitely one of the best maintained and preserved sites in the city, though not the most ornate (again, it was originally built as a convent); we passed several classes in progress, one of which was in the process of making decorations for the Day of the Dead--see picture. At that time there was also an exhibit of prints, spanning several rooms around the courtyard, and exploring it was the perfect way to spend an hour after having a great lunch just a few feet away. It is definitely a place to visit as a tourist, but it's greatest value is to the community, who I hope appreciate it.
