While visiting I had to check out this huge goose sculpture. It's a hotel, and although we rung the bell, it wasn't possible to get inside the gate. You probably need to be a hotel guest, or have a private invitation. read more

We enjoyed the various installments and murals there, but I really enjoyed the location. The architecture is amazing and the courtyard is beautiful. It's also free to enter. San Miguel de Allende is more than tacos and tequila and the tourists who subsist on them. It's got…read morea lot of intriguing history, so naturally there's a historical museum right across from the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel. The evocative museum is housed in an 18th-century, two-story colonial mansion owned by Mexican independence war hero Ignacio Allende. There's a bucolic central courtyard where you can find the way to the restroom. The furniture is authentic to the period. It gave us an idea of what life was like for a Creole family before the revolution. There's bilingual signage in Spanish and English, though it's more convenient to follow the audio tour available. It took us less than an hour to walk though the building. There are other museums in the city devoted to local crafts like toys and decorative masks, but this struck us as the most essential one. Admission was MX$70. RELATED - Exploring San Miguel de Allende? Here's a collection of places I've visited and reviewed: https://yelp.to/mNfHj1axEC

One spot to add to the list is this free arts center established in a historic building built around a water spring in Zona Centro. Jamie W and I casually walked in and saw rooms filled with colorful folk art. Interestingly, of most interest to me was an exhibit from Yasuaki Yamashita, a Nagasaki-born atomic bomb survivor who used his art to advocate for world peace. The cost of entry is 50 pesos, which I was a bit reluctant to pay. Let me tell you, it was well worth it! The museum is clean, well organized, and has many vibrant displays. Both children and adults will enjoy the colorful displays. An added bonus is that the building is air conditioned. Do yourself a favor and go all the way to the top of the building and spend some time on the terraces. They offer a relaxing roof-top view of the city.

The day I went I was blessed with a local school's 4th or 5th grade class enjoying a field trip. To watch the kids' excitement, wonder, and amazement was thrilling to me. Here are a couple of Pro Tips to enhance your enjoyment: 1) There's a nice patio on the roof that affords a terrific view of San Miguel de Allende. There are tables and chairs and awnings so it's a wonderful place to just sit back, catch your breath, and take in the city's beauty. 2) There's a small garden(?) patio(?) fountain area(?) (not sure what to call it here) on the first level. This, too, is a wonderful place to just catch yourself after the stimulation of the museum. 3) The majority of the description placards are in Spanish. (About 20% are English and Spanish both.) But here, Google Lens / Google Translate is your New Best Friend. I leaned heavily on this crutch to both learned a great deal, and to learn a few new Spanish phrases. Finally, I have to recommend the staff: Every single one I encountered seemed to have made it their personal mission that I enjoy everything the museum has to offer.
