This is the passenger side. You can see it is at an angle.

do not get your car aligned at this tire shop the mexican mechanic that does the alignment uses a slide hammer to fix camber. yes a slide hammer. well it turned out that when he tried to fix my alignment with a slide hammer on the subframe he shifted the center of the subframe and shifted the control arms slightly towards the passenger side causing positive camber on the drivers side and negative camber on the passenger side and this put uneven pressure on the axels damaging both. the subframe being centered controls the camber alignment on vw jettas going all the way back to like 2006. the reason the alignment was off was because the strut was bent slightly on one side by using a slide hammer to shift the subframe that attaches to the control arms! he inadvertently gave more space on one of the axels and less on the other. this caused the axels to fail 3 months later. dont ever use tricks on german cars! maybe this works on japanese or korean or american not german engineering, you never ever should shift the subframe unless you know its off center. never use a slide hammer ever!!! this low level employee that should never touch a high performance car just bent all the tty bolts that hold it in place. now there is weaken control arm bushings, rattling, and axels that are on the verge of snapping!!! i saw the guy do it while i was paying. at the time i didn't think anything of it but 3 months later when i replaced the struts, the subframe shifted towards the passenger side throwing off the camber. i saw him use the slide hammer on the driver side, hammering in the direction of the passenger side. so it was obviously him. Mechanical Fact: You never try to force movement on a torque to yield bolt. Why? Why You Should Never Force Movement on a TTY Bolt 1. Risk of Bolt Failure or Breakage: TTY bolts are already stretched to near their yield point after proper torquing, making them less tolerant of additional stresses. Forcing movement--such as prying, hammering, or applying lateral/shear forces--can push the bolt beyond its designed limits, causing it to snap, fracture, or further deform. Unlike reusable bolts, TTY bolts don't "spring back" fully; extra force can lead to immediate failure or weaken them for future use, compromising the joint's integrity. 2. Loss of Clamping Force: The primary advantage of TTY bolts is their ability to maintain uniform tension. Any forced manipulation disrupts this, potentially loosening the bolt or reducing its hold. This is especially dangerous in high-load areas, as it could lead to vibrations, part separation, or catastrophic failure over time (e.g., a subframe shifting under driving stresses). 3. They Are Single-Use by Design: Once installed, TTY bolts should not be disturbed without replacement. Forcing movement often implies you're trying to adjust or remove the assembly without fully accounting for this, which aligns with why manufacturers specify replacement--reusing or stressing them risks inconsistent clamping and safety issues. Specific Risks in Your Subframe Example In automotive suspension systems, subframes are often secured with TTY bolts to ensure precise alignment and structural stability. These subframes connect to control arms, which maintain wheel camber (the vertical angle of the wheels relative to the road, crucial for handling, tire wear, and stability). * Damage from Impact Tools Like a Slide Hammer: A slide hammer delivers repeated shock loads (impulse forces) to pull or jar a stuck part free, often used for rusted or seized components. Applying this to a subframe while it's still held in place by TTY bolts is problematic because: * Shear Stress on Bolts: The bolts are primarily designed for axial tension (pulling force along their length), not sideways shear or sudden impacts. The hammering action can shear the bolts, strip threads, or crack the bolt heads/shanks, leading to immediate breakage or hidden fatigue cracks that fail later. * Misalignment of Suspension Components: Forcing the subframe can bend or stress connected control arms, bushings, or mounting points. This directly affects camber alignment--if the subframe shifts even slightly out of spec, it can cause uneven tire wear, poor handling, steering pull, or reduced stability at speed. In severe cases, it could lead to loss of control or accelerated wear on ball joints, shocks, or other parts. * Compromised Safety: Subframes support critical systems like steering, brakes, and engine mounting. Any forced movement risks creating play or instability in the chassis, increasing the chance of accidents, especially under dynamic loads like cornering or braking. Instead of forcing with a slide hammer, the recommended approach for stuck subframes professional alignment.

Experienced a substantial gash in my tire (yay Oakland potholes) and needed a new tire. I actually hadn't needed to get new tires yet for my current car, and I'm far from an expert, so I needed advice. Also needed same-day replacement. A mechanic acquaintance recommended I "go to International," so I Yelped for body shops in the area and found Turbo. (Bonus: the best Vietnamese food in Oakland is here, so you can treat yourself after.) I called in at 8:00am, their listed opening hour. A man picked up. I didn't know what tire I needed, but he told me they definitely had it for my car, and a change would take a half hour or so. Great! So I left to embark on a journey at grandma speeds on my spare tire. Nice garage, looks as if they have all their ducks in a row. The guy at the front was helpful at answering my questions, checking my tires, and offering the best recommendation for my situation - not necessarily recommending the most expensive tire. He actually recommended the cheaper tire because it would align more with my other tire's remaining lifespan. His honest, pragmatic advice--and the fast, professional service--convinced me that this will be my go-to place for tire and car stuff going forward.

Needed two new front tires. In and out in 20 minutes.

Late review, but here goes! My left front tire went flat pretty late at night and I had to wait until the weekend was over while my spare was on to get an appointment anywhere. I called here first thing on a Monday morning and went in the same morning. I got both of my tires for about $300 or whatever the receipt says. I went ahead and replaced my right front tire as well since it was pretty bald. I was in and out in about 15 minutes. I'd definitely come back as long as they have my size tires! :)

A $50 receipt to patch a flat tires that was listed at $35.

I'm only giving this a 2-star rating because I appreciate the work done by the people that actually repaired my flat. I give the owner a 1-star for his trustworthiness. They they their prices displayed for flat tires at $30 and $35 for 18"+ but they charged me $50 for my 20" tires. When I asked him why was the price $50 he said that the quoted prices were only for 15/16" tires but the sign clearly says 18"+ is $35. When I stated this fact, he mumbled a few words that included "the sign is old" and then said "Mercedes"...Yes, I have a new Mercedes and I guess that's how he decides the pricing of my TIRE FIX!?!?!? I've since called a few other local options and found $30-40 to be the going rate. I got played. Thing is I needed 4 new tires and this place lost my business by overcharging me $15 to fix a flat. Ver short sighted business owners out there.

I originally came in because of a tire-pressure issue and was told that two of my tires needed to be replaced. I trusted the shop's recommendation and agreed to the replacement. I trusted all the very positive yelp reviews about how they know what they're doing and won't take advantage of you. I feel like it was a little weird that they didn't tell me what brand or quality of tires they were going to install or ask if I had a preference. My car had Michelin tires, and since no options were presented to me, I assumed the replacements would be of reasonably comparable quality. Instead, they installed Advanta tires, a much more budget-oriented option. I was never asked whether I wanted budget, mid-range, or premium tires, nor was I given the option to stay with Michelin or choose another comparable brand. Had the options and prices simply been explained to me, I would have chosen higher-quality tires. I was also surprised to learn afterward that they moved my existing Michelins from the front to the rear and installed the brand-new Advantas on the front. My understanding is that when only two tires are replaced, the generally recommended practice is to put the new/deeper-tread tires on the rear, even on a front-wheel-drive vehicle, for better stability and wet-weather handling. None of this was discussed with me. On top of that, I initially came in to have my tire pressure addressed, yet the tire-pressure warning light came back on the very next day. I had to drive all the way back to the shop, where I was then told that their PSI reader had been off the previous day, so the tire pressures hadn't been set correctly. Any one of these issues by itself might have been understandable, but together they left me questioning the shop's quality control and communication. I had to make an unnecessary return trip because of inaccurate equipment, wasn't consulted about the brand or quality of the tires I was purchasing, and wasn't given an explanation for the tire placement.

The shop that originally mounted my tires is in Fremont, but living in Oakland I needed somewhere closer. AVN was referred to me by Car Care Service. AVN is efficient w/ good service. I needed tires mounted & balanced, TPMS setup, and an alignment, and they got it all done in an hour and change. I showed up at the beginning of my appointment window and they were ready to go. Their pricing is straightforward & upfront, no hidden fees/surprises. As far as I can tell, everything was done perfectly. I'm not out here checking torque specs but I feel I can trust their work based on the referral and reviews. After everything was done they were also able to get a new tire mounted on my full-size spare. I will be back because I forgot to ask them to unmount the tires from my stock rims. Overall, I would recommend them to anyone looking to get tire/alignment service.

Today I brought in my new to me (used) sporty car because the tire warning light indicated a problem. AVN located and removed a nail and patched the tire. They also pointed out a missing lug and a stripped lug on another wheel.* No charge. I don't mean to claim that they never charge for patches, but I do want to point out that they treat their regulars well. Vo and I discussed the condition of my current tires and various options for eventual replacements. He was well informed and gave clear advice with no sales pitch. AVN's tire supplier's warehouse is on Bay Farm, so if you need tires that aren't in stock onsite, it's very likely that they could be delivered within 30-60 minutes. There's a lot to like about AVN. * Bonus Review: Alex's crew at Diamond Auto (where I purchased my car) replaced 2 lugs. If you're looking for a reliable used car salesman, I recommend Alex.
