Lucca is one of the few towns that was not bombed during WWII and therefore the wall is completely in tact, and you can walk all the way around the top of the wall to circle the city. We didn't make it all the way around as we started the walk fairly late in the day. However, as we approached the area to return to the train station, we discovered this wonderful restaurant . . . "San Colombano". . . which is actually accessible from the top of the wall. In typically un-stylish American fashion, we arrived quite a bit earlier than the usual hour for an Italian dinner. Nonetheless, San Colombano was very welcoming and we received no resistance to our request for dinner service, even at this relatively early hour. As we had been walking the narrow streets of Lucca for several hours even before starting our hike much of the way around the top of the wall, . . . we were in desperate need of "refreshment". We enjoyed several large glass bottles of acqua (water) for 2.50 Euros each . . . a very nice Carafe of Bianco (8.00 Euros) . . . and the highlights . . . Three pizzas!!!. . . one for each of the 3 of us . . . a Pizza Funghi Porcini (9.00 Euros) and two Pizzas Primavera (7.00 Euros each). These Pizzas were light and tasty and perfectly "hit the spot". I highly recommend a trip not only to the historic city of Lucca . . . but stop by San Colombano for a drink and a bite when you visit!
