Try something new everyday....It's my motto!!
I've rock climbed before on an awesome date night awhile back, but never free climbed and never with the kiddos. I must admit I was a bit apprehensive to do this without a harness, but Rory took excellent care of us and calmed my fears. He gave us a mini lesson and showed us how to properly fall so we don't hurt ourselves. He explained their grading system and how to differentiate the course on the walls to stay within our comfort zone and how to push ourselves when we were ready. He was also super encouraging and very positive in nature. He was calm with the kiddos, too. Kuddos and much gratitude to you, Rory!
The place is really incredible and "lounge" is the perfect term for it. There's really comfy couches, books, plants, good tunes, cool decor made out of ropes and garage doors that open up and allow a lot of daylight and fresh air. This makes journeying here even on the most gorgeous of days a truly lovely experience. I could definitely hang here for awhile. You really won't want to leave!
Most importantly, it's super chill and completely non-intimidating or competitive. Everyone is there to admire everyone and watch them problem solve. It's neat to see how someone will chose to tackle a course compared to someone else. It's a lot of thinking and strategy! There's also things beginning kids can do that "experts" can't and visa versa, which is interesting to witness.
There's a gym in the back and light up walls where you can plan and record your own climbing challenge. You can save them and share with anyone in the world who has the same machine! Way cool!
It's $15 for a day pass for kiddos and $18 for adults. There's currently also a Groupon online. I believe shoe rentals are an additional charge though.
They sell chalk for your hands and have a vending machine for snacks and drinks. You may also bring your own, which is nice.
Parking right out front is super easy and unmetered.
Apparently the more family friendly days are Sundays for "drop in" for those who have had a previous lesson. A lesson is initially required for all kids. It's recommended for children over 8 years of age. They do have camps and after school classes too!
I'm thrilled to find not only a new hobby that includes fitness, but one I can do with the entire fam, rain or shine! Yay! I'm also stoked and feel much safer now when my kiddos want to go nuts and scale rocks at National Parks!
P.S. I must say, I prefer this very much to rock climbing. It's nice to just get up and go and not have to feel the pressure of having someone to belay or be that person for someone.
P.S.S. Go see 'Free Solo' after you climb. It's an insane story of a free climber who conquered Yosemite's El Capitain! NUTS!! read more
