Kevin McBrides gallery called The Osprey's Nest spans two store fronts on Chincoteague's Main…read moreStreet. Inside (and out) you 'll find piles and stacks and shelves of prints, T-shirts, mugs, posters and paintings of McBride's rather fanciful interpretations of the ubiquitous Chincoteague pony (now, registered as an official breed). Fanciful? Maybe a better word is inventive interpretations? Or maybe sentimental interpretations? Or dare I say, in my oath to be honest- amazingly poor, souless, anatomically incorrect, sad and just plain awful interpretations of these somewhat stunted animals. Every year, for decades, McBrides creates an original painting of these animals, prancing on the beach, or in the woods, or rounded up by the saltwater cowboys, whose renderings are equally awful. I don't really mind that McBride uses the same figure of cowboy or pony in various paintings, but attention to scale is lacking. The animals are stiff, with odd muscle structure, and even odder bone structure. Yet McBride, a master and taking an image and printing it on thousands of products, does show initiative in marketing. McBride has probably the best location and space for art on the island. It would be nasty to say, maybe he should get some art in there, but that would be nasty of me, right? At the very least, I wonder if McBride might consider taking some time off to REALLY study the animals and their environment, and maybe take some time to look at historical (and contemporary) paintings of horses or other animals, including people. McBride has the will to survive in this withering economic climate, but why not lose the shlock and really, really make some art?

Right as you land on Chincoteague coming off the new bridge is the beautiful art gallery, Clouds &…read moreFolly, operated by husband-and-wife team Randy and Nancy Payne. Both create all the art on display in this small and rustic gallery. Randy specializes in incredible oil paintings of local flavor: Tom's Cove in winter, the Roxy theater, hydrangea blooming in Spring, the abandoned gas station outside of town. His landscapes are breathtaking and pitch-perfect when it comes to the colors of the barrier islands and environs. His "portraits" of the town (buildings, no people) remind me of Edward Hopper, one of my favorite artists of all-time: they're evocative, melancholy, and absolutely captivating. The paintings are pricey -- smaller ones will run you around $300, a larger one can cost over $1,000. But they are an investment in which you'll get many returns (from the pleasure you'll get when you look at one hanging on your wall). Nancy's art is varied, smaller scale, vibrant, and whimsical. She creates chunky jewelry from glass, fabric, wood, gum wrappers, washers, and other interesting found objects. She paints abstract canvas placemats, floor coverings, and wall mirrors in bright, pastel shades. She weaves baskets from wood and old newspapers. She creates greeting cards by using oil paints on newspaper, which you can send to your loved ones in the brown paper bag envelopes she provides. Nancy's art runs from around $18 (for a placemat) to $85 (for a decorative piece incorporating wonderfully painted twigs), so one of her pieces makes a great, more affordable souvenir of your trip to Chincoteague. The Paynes are a wonderfully hospitable couple running a wonderfully stocked studio with an ever-changing inventory. We stop in every time we visit the island and are always enchanted.
