One of the boys was shortchanged on buying a coke and when he pointed this out the staff were quite aggressive. He was also told he was not to sit down outsideI I was outside with another of the boys waiting to order (we did not know we had to go to the counter) and another waitress came out and told us we were not to sit there unless we ordered (we were going to anyway.) I can see where they are coming from but it costs nothing to smile and say good morning or 'can I get you something?' rather than being aggressive and rude. Won't go there again.

It couldn't have been nicer and you'd go a long way to find more helpful people. Although there's a large range of baguette fillings on the huge wall board, you can request a different combination of your choice. My husband was able to choose various fillings for his baguette from the selections offered behind the glass counter. You can choose from different breads as well - oat, wholegrain, etc - and everything is freshly made in front of you by the staff wearing gloves. There are some hot meals available too - see the blackboard for daily specials - and you can have the baguette heated too. As I can't eat wheat, I asked if I could have a salad bowl (again,not on the menu) and I was able to choose what I preferred (coleslaw, grated cheese, tomato, cucumber, spiced rice, pineapple). Our meals were made (you get a lot for your money)and served quickly by friendly people. The coffees were excellent and everything came in lovely china. Everything is clean and attractive; there are lots of round tables to sit at inside but there are tables and chairs outside too, although they are at the side of the busy shopping street. Next time we're in Pontypridd we'll go straight back there!

They also have a good range of sandwich fillings, although these become more and more limited as the day wears on into early afternoon. The prices here are very good; a salad box stuffed to the brim with you choice of goodies will set you back only £2.50, while sandwiches start from £1.70 and baguettes are not too much more. If sandwiches and a fast lunch are what you're after, this is a place that will see you well.

The smell of cooking meat never fails to attract passers-by, though - and before you know it on a fine day the seating under the trees is packed out with people tucking into overloaded bacon sandwiches and cheap cups of tea. Its popularity endures despite its proximity to the old Victorian underground toilets, which waft up a vague scent of cleaning products, and the resident pigeons, notorious for their accurate aim, perched in the trees above - you have been warned!

This means that quite often there can be a build up of rubbish and chips, attracting seagulls and pigeons galore. They do a good range of food, pretty much what you might expect (aka the same as everywhere else in the city centre). But their coffee is definitely of a higher standard than most places. A great place to sit (of you can claim a table, the place is quite small) and watch the world go by. The only problem with this place, and the thing which in my opinion has let them down time and time again, are the staff. There are always male staff members when I venture inside and they can seem a little rude, busy and dismissive. But they make good coffee, so fair game.

The shop was relatively quiet for a Friday lunchtime, which can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on what you require during your hour off. Atlantic Coffee's cakes were fresh and gratifying, but their range of teas left a lot to be desired. I kind of resent paying £1.50 for Twinings tea I can buy at Tesco for less than a pound a box. I found the baristas here to be very friendly, even when I decided midway to opt for a peppermint tea instead of my usual green. Luckily there was no one in the queue, so service was quick and efficient. As much as I hate saying this, I find the Starbucks a few doors down to have a more relaxed and soothing atmosphere (maybe it's all those couches, who knows). Atlantic Coffee does offer a range of food many coffee chains don't, such as bacon rolls, quiches, soups, and salads.
