My first time in Boise, visiting a lifelong friend, we hired Mike Raymondi to be our guide on the Owyhee River for a day of catch and release trout fishing. The three of us, retired women with modest fishing experience and a love for nature, instantly felt at ease as he selected the waders, boots and gear in the well-organized TRR store in Eagle ( when you go there, look up, you'll have a fish's point of view- watery blown glass ornaments suspended from the ceiling). We followed Mike's truck to the river where he selected a sweet spot clear of snags and sunken hazards. The birds and awe-inspiring panoramic beauty made focusing on the orange indicator a bit of a challenge. Mike gave us a quick and articulate tutorial on casting, mending and setting the lines, then he spaced us out on the length of the river where he grew several sets of eyes, simultaneously guiding our line work and alerting us to the bobber's behavior, which you see before you feel anything. I missed several nibbles because I saw a tanager or a flicker, but we all hooked and I landed a big brown trout with lovely speckles and no wounds from the brief fight we had in reeling it in. The big takeaway about a good or bad day fishing, according to Mike, is this: hooking and landing combine a multitude of very different skills, and many people who say the fishing was bad, missed the nibble or the set, and failed to catch what fish were there. To me, there is no bad day of fishing if you are in the care of a competent guide, supplied with proper gear, a spectacular picnic lunch (kudos to Tasso in Eagle) and in an exceptionally beautiful piece of God's country, which was the case for us. Now for those of you who believe the only value in fishing is catch, catch, catch, this review will mean nothing. Mike mustered all of his powers to switch out the types of nymph flies (we were nymphing this time), and we had a spare afternoon, but you can't make fish eat when they don't wish to. For my husband's 66th birthday, our two adult children, my husband, & I went fly fishing on the Owyhee River withTRR Outfitters. Our guides were Brock & Mike from TRR. They were great with a beginner like myself, who has gone fly fishing only one other time with them, all the way to my son who has fly fished several times. They gave my daughter & I, a quick, but detailed lesson before fishing. We both caught more fish than we could count. They were great with my husband & son too who caught nonstop fish. They know the River extremely well & the fishing spots, even better. They were fun, patient, knowledgeable, & funny. They provided the gear; & fitted us prior to going out on the water. The lunch was wonderful & we had a choice of bakery sandwiches, with pasta salad, cookies, & chips. This was a great experience & we plan to make it an annual trip. read more

Best fly shop in the valley in my opinion for several reasons. Hands-down the number one reason is that the folks who work here are just plain friendly. I've been shopping here for eight years and never once have I gotten even a whiff of attitude of flyfishing supremacy that can so often be found in fly shops. These folks are younger, fish a lot, and are happy to share their knowledge with you whether you make a purchase or not. Staff is always eager to accommodate and help you figure out what's going to work best for you. My husband and I were interested to learn a bit about fly fishing, so we took their 101 course held here every Saturday. And even better, its the only free fly fishing introduction course in the Treasure Valley. The course was surprisingly pretty in-depth. We got to learn 4-5 different knots, the anatomy of the pole and lines, and even the mechanics on how to cast. They also took us around the store to show us the different tools and gear you can buy to be a successful fly fisherman. At the end of the class, they handed us each our own practice pole, and let us cast in their parking lot. It was a great time and taught us a lot about this sport. I really love that they offer this to the public and if I ever get the hankering to take the plunge, I will be back to purchase something and ask them for advice. Thank you! read more

Just picking up fly fishing in the local area I was hesitant to go into a shop like any fisherman would be. I come from an area where Bass fishing was primary source of fishing. I spoke to Brock at TRR who was super friendly and knowledgeable. He was quick to help out and steer me in a great direction. I have fly fished before but not in the area. He gave me plenty of tips and go-tos in the fly world. I am very impressed with this shop and will be returning to get private classes in the very near future! I've been on the road fly fishing for the last 6 weeks throughout Northern Nevada, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Northern California and Oregon. A common type that I find in our sport is the pretentious one. A lot of fly shops I walk into give me a look of distaste and treat me like I'm some type of not to be trusted foreigner. Well I'm not some foreigner, but a combat vet who has earned every right to be there. TRR Outfitters was one of the few exceptions. From the minute I walked in, Matt and the staff that were working treated me like one of their own. They helped me with a nice gear and fly selection and pointed me in the right direction for my next river to fish in. They also take care of veterans, which is always a wonderful thing for us, as it should be for you non veterans as well. One way to support veterans, is to support the small businesses that support us. I hope to be back soon and get a guided trip through them. I came to the Boise area for vacation and wanted to check this fly fishing shop out. It's actually located in Eagle, ID. It's located on a busy street and the size of the store is adequate. Brother-in-law set up a guided tour on the Owyhee River this past week while my family were in town. Never being on a guided trip before, and with even less fly fishing experience this was an extremely well ran, incredible experience. While visiting from Tampa we booked a days fishing on the Owyhee River and couldn't be happier about it. Our guide, Mike, was fantastic. Very knowledgeable, friendly, and a great fisherman. He was also very patient with a couple saltwater bait fishermen. The fishing was excellent for late October (several browns and a rainbow), the lunch, which was part of the package, was good, and the scenery was beautiful. In addition, to all that, the staff at the actual store couldn't have been more helpful. There was a shirt my son liked that they didn't have in his size and they offered to ship it to him. Just great people. I travel to Boise 4 times a year and will look to fish with Mike every time. read more
