Finishing the Unfinished Home Improvement - A project in the works repainting a 3 bedroom house, a bit awkward but nothing I can't handle.

Finishing the Unfinished Home Improvement

UPDATE: I wrote this review a year ago, and have since had Eric do a whole bunch more work. His…read morework has continued to be excellent, and something I didn't mention about Eric seems important to say now: He is just such a truly nice man. A year ago I wrote, "He is the best!" And now, after living in our house and seeing his fine work every day for a year, and calling him back to do even more work, I still think he is the best. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Eric does a fantastic job of looking at your whole house as a system. We asked him to help us out because we had gotten some flooding and our basement bathroom had a lot of mold. He did a great job, put in a proper drainage system, and fixed a lot of details along the way. He knew we planned to add a powder room to the second floor, so got it plumbed in before he filled in the concrete. Some contractors just come in and do the job you tell them to do and no more. Because Eric has architecture skills and construction skills, he sees more than many contractors do. He spots potential problems that he explains to you, and also sees ways that he can save you future costs, then he makes informed suggestions to you in advance so that you can make a better decision about how to renovate your home. We have an older home with a lot of quirks, to the extent that we would have contractors come to give a quote and then never hear from them again. We really needed someone like Eric. I talked to a lot of contractors in Edmonton after moving here two years ago, and became increasingly depressed about having to spend a fortune going piecemeal or having to spend a fortune on contracting companies that wouldn't even give us a quote until we had given them thousands of dollars to start the job. I was just about ready to give up, then I found Eric. He can deal with just about anything. He is the best!

Hired Eric to finish my 5x7 bathroom. What a mistake!! If only I could post photos. Initially…read morequoted $3500 to redo the floor and wall tiles, replace some cement board and put in new faucets. I also asked for him to install a toilet after the initial estimate. The bathroom ended up costing over $9000 to redo because he did tasks I did not ask for him to do - eg. changing wall light to ceiling light, ripped out vanity, etc. For $9000, the work he did was poor. He scratched the bathtub requiring me to purchase and install a new one. The tiles are completely uneven and not level with the wall. They are also covered in grout in spots and he installed broken tiles. The floor tile is missing grout in spots, but he somehow was able to put grout on the hallway walls requiring me to sand and repaint those walls as well. He made multiple holes in my wall and just left them for me to fix. The mud for the drywall was not properly applied, smoothed or sanded. I had to remud the walls and sand before I painted them. The vanity was installed with a large gap between the vanity and the wall. It is also not centred on the wall. He cut a large hole in the vanity so I cannot even move the vanity to make it flat against the wall or centre. When requested to fix the problems, he refused. He did offer to put a lien on my house though.

To put it plainly: they are fantastic…read more I had water damage due to a neighbor's unit flooding. My condo hired a reconstruction company that was rather bad. I was sent a painter who didn't know what he was doing and it got so bad he started to yell at me and I had to threaten to have the police come to escort him away. Ghost was a breath of fresh air. Josh, the owner, set up an appointment and was precisely on time. If you have worked with contractors this is unprecedented in and of itself. He assessed the poor paint job another painter had done and said he would have Geovanna come out (on a long weekend at that). She called me the day before to let me know when she would come by. She was very friendly and was aghast at how poor an effort the previous painter made. She said if anything he made it worse by using inferior paint (I offered to give the bad painter the right paint but he refused). She found all the problem areas and spent about 9 hours fixing his mistakes. She used woodfiller properly, sanded until everything was looking perfect, and made the effort not only to do it right but come back the next day to see how one problem area dried. I simply cannot recommend them enough. Edmonton is filled with hacks who say they know what they are doing but Ghost proved to me quality workmanship is out there. Thank you Geo, thank you Josh.

Diamond Contracting

Diamond Contracting

In the fall of 2010, we embarked on a journey to renovate our condo. We live in a 40-year-old high…read morerise, and the last time a reno had been done was when the previous owners moved in some 35 years prior (well, they had done some work themselves, but nothing professional, or even to code). We ended up going with Diamond Contracting, whom we found through the BBB (A+ rating with no complaints in the past five years - not just no resolved complaints, no complaints. Period.). Though Diamond did not give us the lowest bid, we chose to go with them because we were impressed with the thoroughness and professionalism of owner Sheldon Ens. His inspection prior to giving us the estimate was, by far, the most thorough. He checked places and pointed out things that others had missed. And it did not feel as if he were trying to get more money from us. The things he pointed out were necessary. He could not give us an estimate without talking with his sub-contractors, especially the electrician. It was the electrician who made us aware of the limitations of our old building and the changes in code. As I said, Diamond did not give us the lowest bid, nor did they give us the highest bid. They were right in the middle. More importantly, the estimate was accurate! We were only a tiny bit over budget, and everything we spent over the estimate was because of things we had added since our original request. How many contractors come in right on budget? Sheldon was understanding of our desire to save money. He didn't try to talk us into unnecessary upgrades, and even affirmed our decision to avoid certain upgrades, saying that they were not appropriate to the age of the building and we could easily "price ourselves out of the market" by getting too fancy. He did not object to installing IKEA cabinets, and he supported our doing some of the work (i.e. painting) ourselves. Brian, our project supervisor, was fantastic, regularly keeping us updated and answering what were likely silly questions with patience. And his work is amazing and beautiful. He added finishing touches that I wouldn't have thought of but that add so much to the end result. I enjoyed working with the various subcontractors. All but one were responsive and reliable. Finally, our building manager said that he has never worked with a crew as professional as the crew we brought in and that our guys left the common areas in better shape than when they first went through. He asked for several of Sheldon's cards, and I know he has recommended Diamond to other owners in our building. He said it was a joy to work with them. Overall, I highly recommend Sheldon and Diamond Contracting. If you are considering a home renovations, give them a call.
