We had been working with three other long distant funeral homes in trying to make arrangements - almost impossible to get them to commit to costs and logistics. I spent hours on the phones with them and although they all came well recommended (one of whom even handled my father's funeral) none of them could hold a candle to Curlew Hills. They were beyond professional, patient and extremely supportive. Every single detail was reviewed and confirmed. It's just so personal at least for us. They left nothing to chance, were responsive to our questions, calls and emails. We decided to abandon the long distant arrangements based on the level of care Curlew extended to us. It wasn't routine. It wasn't just another client. It meant something! Our religious traditions were respected. We were speechless because for an entire month we had been dealing with funeral homes - where it meant nothing at all to them. We were frequent visitors to Curlew Hills for the yearly 911 memorial and we will remain with them FOREVER! It seemed to lack the planning and oversight by staff members that is so critical on such an important day. The flowers that were coordinated through Curlew looked sadly wilted. There lacked any tribute to the vibrant life of the deceased in the way of pictures, videos, or memorabilia. The little prayer cards that were distributed were made out of paper and wrinkled as soon as you put them in your pocket. There was no comforting wrap up speech by a staff member, just a quick sentence on how to exit. There was no opportunity for each person to put a single flower on the coffin as a final goodbye. There was a little confusion with the procession of cars and how to line up. In a time of grief, Curlew should step up and provide opportunities to make the planning easy for the family.

A staff member, Brandon, explicitly checked the state system and verified that my late brother-in-law was not legally married. Despite having clear verification that he had no legal spouse, Hodges Funeral Home still handed his remains over to a woman claiming to be his wife--basing their decision on paperwork that was not even a valid legal document. ​Because of their complete failure to uphold legal standards and protect the rights of next of kin, his remains are now gone. His mother and his only child have been stripped of the ability to lay him to rest and are left with nothing. ​Handling a loved one's final arrangements requires trust, diligence, and respect. Hodges Funeral Home demonstrated none of these. I strongly caution anyone going through a loss to stay far away from this place.
