Western Carolina University is amazing!!…read more As I write this review I am a Junior. I love Western Carolina because ALL of the staff are really nice and respectful. The professors, janitors, student workers, peers... everyone! I have never had a professor here who was hard to deal with. Each are very unique and well experienced in what they teach. The first two years you must live on campus, which can be hard to adjust to, but in the end, gives you a great experience that will be worth the while. The campus is really beautiful and there are many things to do. The gym is really nice and it is two stories. There is a track, weight lifting equipment, treadmills and various cardio machines, a rock wall, and a basketball court which can double as a volleyball court. You can rent games or sports equipment with your cat card. Western also hosts tons of events like concerts, fairs, karaoke, etc... All of which are free to WCU students. The sporting events are also free to students because it is covered by the athletic fee. They are very cool to attend. Western Carolina is also very accessible to students and people with disabilities. We are the first school in the country to offer a University Participant program (UP), offering students with disabilities a chance to come to college for 2 years and gain college life experience. The program helps individuals to become more independent so that they can one day live on their own and have a job for themselves. The UP students are not separated from other students, rather, they are included in the mix with all other students and their classes. It's great! Let's talk tuition! Compared to other universities in North Carolina, Western is pretty cheap. We have NC promise which takes a lot off of tuition, and also, books here are free (very, very, few classes require out of pocket book fees) I have met out of state students who have come to Western because it is cheaper for them to pay out of state tuition here than it is for them to pay in state in their own states!

1) I interviewed with the college of missions, as a single parent, letting them know who I was…read moreprior to attending. They accepted me into my program, then when it came time to do internships I was not accepted BECAUSE I was a single parent. 2) I went thru a severely difficult time. An advisor (professor) in the college of missions, as well as an outside person who I was referred to by the college for mentoring, not only gossiped but also added to the severely difficult time I was going thru, rather than be any help. 3) After having to leave the college due to personal and financial hardship, which was also impacted by the 1st two points made above, I had a personal balance owed to the college - which I made arrangements to pay down directly to them. They turned the balance over to collections which doubled what I owed, regardless of my communication with them and commitment to pay. It wasn't any type of tremendous balance to the college, but it was for me (made worse by the collection fee that was added) while trying to survive the recession following 2009. I reached out to administration, thinking they might be willing to assist, they did not. I now owe a tremendous amount of student loan debt ($40k), in addition to the smaller personal debt, to Toccoa Falls College, which I believe is a enormous burden that goes against the Christian principals which they teach and promote. I am still doing my part, every day, to take care of my responsibilities regarding my debts, but they need to look at the negative impact and hardships they are putting on families, in a variety of ways, for the long-term.

Peaceful and open to the public (and free), the college's namesake is just a short walk on a level gravel trail to a beautiful vista. We were there pretty early in the morning, and there was not another soul in sight, student or otherwise. To find Toccoa Falls, just enter the campus at the main gate and follow the signs to the Gate House Cottage. Park in the cottage's lot, and enter through the wrought iron gates to the right of the front door as you're facing the building. There are a couple of benches that would be a perfect spot for a picnic lunch or to just to sit for a while to watch the falling water.

Large trees, tons of bushes and flowers and well manicured landscapes are all around. I saw squirrels and a variety of birds. Parking was easy enough to find. If you are coming here get a day visitor pass online that you can print off ahead of time. That helped my day go smoother. The steps on the way to the test gave me a nice leg pump! The building where I took my test was spotless. It was so clean. The custodial staff is doing it right! The staff I encountered which was three separate people, were all friendly and helpful. It was nice because I was pretty stressed out about the test. This is a small but great looking campus. I would hope that the professors and students are as friendly as the people I encountered.

A Beautiful Campus With Deep Flaws (Dahlonega Campus, Corps of Cadets Focus)…read more UNG's Dahlonega campus is undeniably beautiful and steeped in tradition, but that beauty can be misleading. My experience is specifically tied to the Corps of Cadets, and while there were a few shining highlights, there are serious, systemic issues that students--especially cadets--should be aware of. Pros: Stunning Campus: The grounds are well-maintained and picturesque. Great Trails Nearby: Yahoola Creek and the Reservoir are peaceful and easily accessible. Some Passionate Professors: A few go above and beyond, especially in the sciences or medical fields. Supportive ROTC Staff: People like Ms. Prince and Armstrong were phenomenal. Town Square Access: Easily walkable with food, shops, and the "Dahlonega Mile" bar crawl. Cons: Dining Services: Repeated issues with food quality, including reports of mold, bugs, and food poisoning. While the dining hall was updated, problems persist--especially during weekends and summer. Facilities: Parking is chaotic, especially during events. Dorms are overcrowded (especially in the Corps), mold-prone, and outdated. The gym is undersized, and laundry isn't free. Student Life: Most clubs are inactive or barely functioning. Corps and Greek life have faced suspensions for hazing/bigotry and other serious issues. ROTC / Corps Culture: The Cadet-led program can lead to toxic power dynamics. Some abuse leadership roles to avoid responsibilities or mistreat others. Corps politics often trump fairness. Final Thoughts: There's a lot of potential here, and I met some incredible mentors and peers during my time. However, the systemic problems--especially in the Corps--undermine that potential. Leadership should be about building others up, not tearing them down. If UNG wants to live up to its history and promise, it needs to seriously address these internal issues, not just put a fresh coat of paint over them.

Such is not surprising as professorial resumes of the UNG College of Education faculty list such things as "Critical Whiteness Studies". As for learning how to effectively deal with a classroom environment, handle difficult students, and developing the skills to ensure future success as a teacher, such is simply not going to happen at the UNG College of Education. My advice: Skip the "social justice" nonsense and choose a college or university that still believes in actual education -- not indoctrination. In terms of customer service, UNG excels at servicing its customers.

I moved from Florida to Georgia with the intent of staying long-term, to work on myself, be with family, and get my associate's and then bachelor's degree I attended two short semesters here with 1 or 2 classes each semester (so few because at the time I was classified as out-state and didn't want to blow funds needlessly), and as I ended up establishing full residency and permanent domicile, I put in the forms to switch from out-state to in-state tuition. I jumped through COUNTLESS hoops in gathering legal paperwork, family and friend testimonials proving that I had lived in Georgia for well over the required amount of time, and submitted it all, to which anywhere else, you'd have no problem. But no, I was denied my deserved in-state classification multiple times, and even the kindest, most helpful office staff who wanted to help my situation could do nothing to fix completely uncalled for and unnecessary case of denial I was given.

My experience at Brenau University has altered my view on affirmative action, after I taught…read moreeconomics and business courses there for fourteen years. When a new lead economics professor was appointed, seemingly on affirmative action grounds, my course quality dropped drastically: our outdated textbook was not even reviewed, let alone changed, in over five years, while solid proposals for course improvements fell on deaf ears and blind eyes. Finally, I was tasked to submit faked Learning Outcome scores in so-called Global Awareness, which I refused to do, instead submitting a new rubric on Global Knowledge and Competence, which was ignored by that same lead professor -- instead, I lost my long-term teaching post after many years of excellent evaluations. When I appealed these decisions to our new "affirmative action" Dean of Business, there were more deaf ears and blind eyes, WHILE MY BRENAU EMAIL WAS CLOSED PRECIPITOUSLY W/O NOTICE! In this instance, apparent affirmative action led not only to the decline of my course -- a disservice to higher education -- but also led to a disservice to the lead professor and the new Dean, who may have achieved their roles on grounds other than their qualifications and abilities. Those disservices are truly shameful, and indeed insulting to those who are alleged to benefit!
