Took this train on our way from Florence to Rome. It was on time & the ride was smooth. This was my 2nd time riding a train in Europe so I was still unfamiliar the process. My boyfriend handled getting the train tickets & got us first class or premium economy seats? Like I said, I'm still unknowledgeable on trains. When we get there, the train pulled in the opposite way of when we took it the first time so we didn't realize we got in the wrong carriage. It was a little crammed but we take our seat only to realize it wasn't our seat. The steward looked at our ticket & told us we were in the wrong carriage. So we had to carry our luggage up what seemed like 10 or so carriages & we finally got settled in our correct seat. They came by to offer beverages & a snack. The WiFi is TERRIBLE. You're better off using your phone data. & the seating was comfortable. There were 2 other couples seated in the same carriage but other than that, the rest of the seats were empty so it was peacefully quiet. Compared to the first train we took (different company but was also premium seating), I preferred this one over the first one.
We took Trenitalia from Rome to Florence and back, and I'm kind of baffled by the 2-star Yelp average. I guess we rode the Frecciarossa, the fastest and likely best train in the system, but we had an easy 5-star experience. The Frecciarossa--Italian for "red arrow"--is one of Trenitalia's long-distance high-speed trains, with a maximum speed of 190 miles per hour. It takes about three hours to drive between Rome and Florence. The Frecciarossa covers that ground in an hour and a half. We booked our tickets a couple weeks in advance, buying Super Economy Business tickets for €34.90 apiece (including a €2 charge for seat selection). Super Economy Business sounds like an oxymoron, but Super Economy just means you can't change your plans and get a refund. If you're a tourist who can commit to a schedule, Super Economy is probably the way to go. I don't know what the standard coaches were like, but our seats were quite clean and comfortable. The trains ran on schedule, and the rides were smooth and painless. I think I fell asleep both ways. For all I know, Trenitalia's lesser trains are all garbage, but I can't complain about the sleek red Frecciarossa. If you're traveling around Italy, high-speed rail seems like the way to go. read more

Depends on what train you get. They are old and outdated, the staff is rude and 1st class was terrible(I can only imagine what coach was like). The trains are dirty, the bathroom is disgusting, and you see the worst side of Italians on the train. read more
Trains are definitely the way to go when you are in Europe. A train ride from Rome (Roma) to Venice (Venezia) (about 325 miles) would take about 3.5 hours. I usually book a first class tickets (carriage 1) when I travel Europe, so I can have more space for your luggage. Sometimes alcoholic beverages (sans hard liquor) and snacks/meal are included, but they aren't very appetizing. However, I picked up my own snacks at the coffee shop at the train station which was open in the early morning (6:30 am). On my trip from Rome to Venice, we got coffee and orange juice (they only had grapefruit) on the train and they offered a sweet or salty snack option. I got the salty option which were toasty bread "chips" that looked like tortellinis. The train offers wi-fi, but it's very slow and took forever to register. It took me six tries filling out the lengthy registration until it finally worked. However, since the internet was so slow, I ended up just using my data plan. In the end, the train was on time and clean; the ride was smooth; and staff were friendly. read more
It's super busy and the teleprompts are a bit harder to read than the airports. I just asked at the help desk, friendly ladies told me exactly where to go. There's no where to sit so if you are early find an empty spot along the wall and sit on your suitcase. Worked for me. Can I say it's so much better than Amtrak? It's been 5 years since I took a train ride in the states, but Trenitalia was a smooth and fast ride. I was so comfortable, had a table right in front of me (I think everyone gets one and it's not attached to the back of another chair. I was seated next to very friendly gentlemen. Originally I didn't sit in my assigned seat. I finally moved over to sit next to the window for the views and the gentleman sitting in front of me moved next to me, and another one moved across. They just sat in what was available until I got with the program. Europeans, I love them! Also when they came checking for our tickets, I couldn't find mine and one of them said, "In your book." There it was! High speed train had me in Florence before I was ready to get off. The views were great, I enjoyed the ride. read more
This review is for the train ride from Florence to Rome and back. We bought our tickets as a party of 2 weeks in advance. The train station in Florence is easy to navigate as is the one in Rome once you get there. My problem was that we were seated across the aisle from each other as opposed to next to each other. The train itself was comfortable and fast. There was plenty of leg room and storage. It did advertise that there is free wi-fi, but you have to have a local cell phone in order to get it. The ride back was very similar and we were seated across form each other in a section of the train the had seats facing one another. We had a table in between us to share and it was pleasant. Again we were on the aisle. All in all, a good experience and I would use this company again. read more

We needed to travel from Rome to Florence and then, a few days later, Florence to Venice. The train was the answer and definitely at the prices quoted. Superfast trains in total comfort. Buffet car to pick up a bottle of wine, we are in Italy, and a nice sandwich. Both trains left dead on time and arrived at the destination in the same way. Perfect in all ways. read more

Brush up on your Italian foreign visitors! During a train stop, we kissed, got accused of ____________ "SEXO!" To the point of physical altercation and being removed by the police! There were no cameras on this short ride to Umbria One person ------ to do the accusation non Italiano speaking couple were removed from the train. Taken to the office for questioning, police with guns and all. Unfounded, no evidence, eventually released with: "No PeneeAlities" "No jail" Great, we're released without going to jail for kissing. Some of the absolutely worst customer service ever. This station was the worst but none of them in Rome, Milan or elsewhere was even moderately good. Didn't know about the other help desk between 9 and 10 so we went through hell twice. Once we had a wait ticket we watched the screen and the desks where the numbers were being called. We had our number called but simply in the time it took to walk to the desk we received a very curt, next number response. Somehow the 20 seconds walking to the counter was not quick enough after waiting an hour and half. On this occasion we even saw them turn an old lady away who had been waiting as long as we had right at 5:30 crying because they were so mean and refused to help her. Don't even get me started on trying to buy the Roma passes supposedly available there. 1. Had to wait in the normal huge line just to get the pass. Waited for an hour and a half again only to be told they didn't have any/they didn't know what it was. Demanded to speak to a manager and eventually they figured out what it was but then didn't know how to sell it. Finally after quite a while they figured out how to sell it but had the old version which was for 3-days instead of the 72-hour pass which they blamed on Rome and the Roma Pass people who of course blamed Trenitalia. Zero stars for customer service. 3 stars for their express trains that nearly ran flawlessly and close to on-time. Only once was I stuck for an hour on tracks because of signal problems. read more

Use the excellent private Italian train Italo. Italo was great. Trenitalia was aweful. With the assistance of an Italian guide, when in San Marghirita, Italy I thought I purchased a Trenitalia train ticket from Florence to Venice for Sunday September 29, 2013. The ticket agent appeared to have some difficulty with her computer and was having a hard time printing out two adjacent seats. Most of the conversation was between her and my Italian guide in Italian. At some point I know I heard him say in Italian Sunday, but I also looked on my calendar to confirm the date. I may have made a mistake. I paid 90 euros for two tickets for the one way trip. (We already had tickets for Venice to Rome. On the Sunday train from Florence to Venice two people were already in our seats, but plenty of room so took two empty seats. Conductor comes by to see tickets: ours were for 28.09 or the prior day!! So in checking the seats--coach number etc I missed the date mistake, but plenty of seats so I thought no big deal. Wrong--he demanded we buy two more seats and to add insult to injury added an additional 50 euro each. Hence we paid a total of 280 euros instead of 90 euros. I just tried going on the Trentitalia web cite to complain and to try to resolve and could not sign on as every country but the USA is an option. I am sure I contributed to the mistake, but am very disappointed in the way the Trenitalia ticket checker responded. We had a ticket--there was room--we obviously had not used it the day before and now I can't get on the cite. Note a later ticket checker shrugged when I tried to explain the problem, When asked if there was anyone else I could talk with they both said no. read more

Used them to go from Florence to Rome. Huge mistake! One of the most god awful modes of transportation on Earth. Purchasing a ticket from a kiosk is stressful enough seeing as most of them don't work. Then, the tickets tell you which coach and seat you're assigned to along with several other passengers. All with the same coach and seat number as you! Aaaaah!!!! Basically, you're assigned a seat that someone else has. The staff are extremely rude and unhelpful as well. Count on your train being late as well. Avoid if you can. read more

Sad thing is having to rely on an unreliable train system in a country that relies on tourism to survive. Having stayed in Florence, we thought it would be great to visit Pisa for a day trip. We bought tickets for the Leaning Tower and the train ride, via Internet. It's a shame that the morning of our trip, we arrived ad t he train station at 6 am to find out that Trenitalia was on strike. We were told that the ticket booth would have at least 1 person there at 7:30 to at least rebook passengers for the next day or refund/credit those who would not be departing. Well, 7:30 came and went. Trenitalia workers came and went... and no one serviced the ticket window. Why can't things "work" in Italy like they do in most other parts of the world? read more

We purchased tickets for a local journey from Venice S.L to Quarto D'altino and this was our first train journey in Italy. The information personnel, after enquiry about reaching our destination did not alert us about the need to validate the ticket, neither did the staff standing right outside the train bogey say anything as we passed him and boarded the train, but we paid for the ticket so it did not make sense to fine us while we were on board. I understand the rules and regulations but a tourist or a traveller would have no idea that they have to stick the ticket in a green machine on the platform before departure. After a conversation with the TC on board, he rudely ignored us and didn't even consider a pardon. More than the fine, it was the inconsiderate and bitter ticket checker that made it a less enjoyable experience. read more

Got me to where I need fine. Trains are beautiful, but trains are rarely on time. We used the Frecciarossa high speed train 3 times from Milan to Venice and Florence, all of them were at least 15 minute late. They need to learn from the Japanese, Germans and French on how to really run a high speed train system. read more
Super easy to get from Rome to Florence. We purchased a second class ticket to ensure we had an assigned seat. We made to be there early just in case. Once they assigned the track we walked up to it and the train was there in five minutes later. We put our carryon bags above our heads in the spot designed for luggage. This way if the train made stops there was no way someone would make off with our bags by using the luggage bay that was far from us by the existing doors (we were assigned seats in the middle). Lady came by with nice cart filled with nice things to eat but we were not hungry. We enjoyed the comfortable seats and fold out tables. What I did not care for was the low blowing Air conditioning. It was warm outside and luke warm on the train. That was annoying but not unbearable. I think if it was hotter that day I would have been pissed. Two things to know when visiting Italy during July buy the huge water bottles and try to drink one a day. Hydration is key. read more

Absolutely BRUTAL. Lack of signage and staff to help and platforms are posted only at last minute. Left us with a very bad taste of train travel in Italy. read more

Pick pockets (2 middle aged women) got my wallet while "assisting" me on the train in ROME with my luggage even while I told them I didn't need their help. Classic diversion in the chaos of boarding with lots of bags. read more

Pisa central had terrible costumer service. I was having problems printing out my ticket and the lady never tried to help. She just said there was nothing she could do and made me buy a ticket for twice as much. Then they put the wrong platform on the screen and I missed my train because of it. I nearly got stranded in Pisa. I've never seen people so unsympathetic in my life. read more

This review is from Venice (S. Lucia) to Florence , when we purchased the seats we specifically requested two seats next to each other and when we got our ticket we couldn't find the number so we sat In seats as close to where we requested and waited for an Attendant to tell us where our seats where, he glanced at our tickets and said the train was full so we should shit anywhere. So we stayed in place, in the next stop however, a couple came in and asked us to move and showed us a ticket showing we were in their seats. We told them what the attendant told us and told them if they asked the attendant and he could find us our seats we would be happy to move. He came over and instead rudely yelled at us to move out of their seats and go in our own, we calmly reminded him what he said earlier and he said that now we should go to our own seats . upon asking for assistance to where our seats where he pointed out that our seats were not only next to each other, they were in completely separate cars! We were so livid that this happened esp since we paid extra to sit first class (63.00 €) and we were not getting what we paid for at all! We had to sit separately the entire way there. I recommend to not use trenitalia unless its your last choice and if you do have to make sure you double check you were given what you paid for and that you get there extra early read more

Trenitalia has the absolute worst customer service ever. As a first time study abroad student, navigating the trains and the different train passes is a challenge, especially when none of the employees offer any assistance. When boarding the train from Florence to Rome with my pass, I was directed to go purchase a seat reservation to ride the train. (this is beyond me after sitting in practically empty railcars and paying hundreds of dollars for the pass) After a few tries on the not user-friendly kiosks, the ticket checker informed me that the reservations for the specific train were not available and that the one I had could be used for the train in an hour. Wanting to be on the train with my group, I asked him what my options were and was told i could PAY AGAIN to the staff on the train and that I should now RUN because the train is leaving. After having the doors closed in my face I was less than excited to miss the beginning of the Pope's service, travel to Rome alone and navigate my way to try and find my group. The staff then ignored me when I went to get on the next train, they don't even scan my ticket or look at me as I got on. On the way home I paid again for a reservation, sitting with my friends, i was told that i would have to pay this specific worker talking to me because i got the wrong type of reservation (who knew, since everything is the sam price) and that i was only allowed to sit there because i was with a group. Still not into being scolded at 21, and definitely not into being treated like I'm stupid when no one wants to assist me when asking for help. Not to mention my first experience with this company when trying to get my pass stamped and having to wait an hour in line because 2 windows are open and then not getting the pass stamped in time so i have to buy a new full price ticket so i didn't miss the train. Then having to wait another hour and a half to get it stamped at a different train station so it didn't happen again. Overall, RUN AWAY from Trenitalia. Zero help in all cases and is rude to everyone. I will never ride with this company when returning to Italy. Please choose a different service or take another mode of transportation. Truly sad how horribly this company treats their customers. read more

Their website is simply appalling! Italy is 10 years behind any other developed country in terms of technology and the trenitalia website is not an exception. It is terribly confusing as well as nearly dogmatic. You ask for a specific date and time and it shows options referring to a different date. It is very easy to get confused especially if you forgot how poorly organised the website is! No hope in getting a refund or changing the booking online. It simply sucks and I am terribly disappointed at their inefficient or even inexistent customer service. Use blablacar italy if you can! read more

Worst experience I have ever had on any train company ever. As a student studying abroad, no one ever told me that you had to validate an ALREADY BOUGHT ticket in Italy. I assumed the ticket was validated since you PAID for it, like in my country. But no. So I had to pay a €60 fine. Except when I didn't have the € on me (broke student), the ticket guy literally threatened to call the cops on me. I tried to explain that I could pay it when it WASN'T 3am back home and my bank could transfer the money, but no. He literally told me it "wasn't his problem". I have never been so mistreated like that from any company while I've been studying in Firenze. I'll be sure to warn my friends also studying abroad and traveling to avoid this train company. His rude attitude was completely uncalled for since I was not objecting to paying the fine, I just did not have any money on me at the time after ALREADY BUYING THE TICKET. Absolutely ridiculous. read more
