I really enjoyed my one-night stay at Tregenna Castle. It's in a superb setting, high up on the hill above the beautiful town of St Ives. My room was clean and very comfortable (I'd booked a single, but was given a double with a small glimpse of the sea) and all of the staff were pleasant and helpful. The meal I had in the Brasserie was excellent; not cheap, but really very good. At breakfast in the main restaurant the next morning there was a good range of food on offer and the cooked food was OK. However the orange 'juice', coffee and toast were all awful! I returned later in the week for a pot of tea... which was excellent and very reasonably priced, and yet again the following weekend for Sunday lunch. This was served carvery style and proved to be tasty and quite good value, although the enormous dining room was almost empty and the general ambience was lacking, despite a very good two-piece band playing live whilst we were eating. Sadly, I didn't get an opportunity to use any of the wide variety of leisure facilities on offer.
So, I have mixed feelings about this place! Their website doesn't work as it should and you can't currently book the hotel or leisure facilities online. With its stunning location and facilities it really ought to be busier than it is and of a much higher grade than it is. But little things like the quality of the coffee, toast and juice and an efficient website can make the difference between really great service and fairly mediocre service. I came away having enjoyed my stay, but feeling that the hotel should have been better than it was. Someone needs to pick it up and give it a good shake. But, if and when they do, it will be Five Star and way, way out of my price range... so maybe it should stay as it is and I can go back and enjoy it again! read more
