This location was easy to find, just off one of the main thoroughfares (A307) and close to the train and bus stations. The entrance, however, was a bit confusing. There was construction going on in the space that faces Old London Road, and there is a small alley adjacent where the entrance is located.
We arrived about an hour prior to the check-in time but the gentleman working the desk allowed us to check in early. Of course, he had a 20 minute conversation with us about life in the United States haha
The room was clean, basic, and no frills. The kettle looked brand new, and the bed and pillows were extremely comfortable! The quirky thing was you could not close the bathroom door unless you lifted the toilet seat up.... the toilet seat was like a centimeter too large for the door to clear it! It was actually quite comical.
I usually felt very warm in the room, there was no way to adjust the temperature and no fan. The window only opened a few inches out, which did not provide any air circulation. However, I noticed this in many places I visited throughout England... it is too warm in buildings and no fans - anywhere! Interesting.
As it is just off a busy road, it was a bit loud (outside) at night and then there was construction that started early in the morning on the building across the alley. However, the location was excellent - plenty of shops, pubs, and even another Travelodge half a block away.
This met my expectations for a budget hotel. I would say 3.5 stars as it was really clean. read more
