** in Italiano sotto*…read more A classic! One of the most traditional Trieste Eateries, and a must visit when in town. Scarpon has been there forever, offering a homey feeling, no big scenes, no pretentiousness, just very good food at very good price and a friendly service. Scarpon has plenty of traditional Trieste dishes, but specializes in fish and seafood, so indulge, because this quality at these prices is very hard to find. I can't even suggest what you eat, haven't had anything that wasn't very good. If you visit from the USA you will probably pass out when you see the price of the branzino here: we are talking about a great fish offered at US hamburger prices! Scarpon is a legend in Trieste and for good reasons!

We finally made it back across to Italy after 4 nights in Slovenia (no yelp in Slovenia!). This…read moreplace is in the border town and is only open from the morning through lunch. We called ahead for a reservation, and they couldn't accommodate us until 2pm on a random Monday. Parking is easy on the street (free 13:00-15:00, then €0.10 for every 10 min after). They didn't have a written menu, but the server was able to explain the menu to us in English. - White bean soup with fermented cabbage and ham. It sounds odd to have sauerkraut in a white bean soup, but it worked really well! - Gnocchi with goulash: pillowy gnocchi with goulash - a true mix of Italy and Slovenia - Amatriciana: the pasta was a little softer than I expected, but the flavors were good The soup was the highlight for me. House wine by the carafe wasn't bad (€5 for 500 ml), and we finished with espressos. Staff were so gracious and welcoming, and it was great to eat among locals in a small town. Bonus: the bill was only €37!

We inquired at a restaurant which did not carry it on they menu and he recommended this place (nice gesture among restaurateurs!). When we arrived the restaurant was full which was a great sign. The hostess was able to seat us after a very short wait. We had their risotto con verze and sausage (Savoy Cabbage Risotto with sausage), the gnocchi and the Ljubljanska and all had a bite because we wanted to try everything. The food was simply fantastic and the prices were really fair. The service was also impeccable. I wish I lived in the area so I could visit more often.
