The process of setting up an interview went well without any issues. The issues arose the moment we needed the interpretation. Thank goodness I was present and was able to translate accordingly or else it would have been extremely troublesome. The interpreter called promptly at the scheduled time from an international number, which was not communicated to me prior, so I was slightly taken aback. Then when the interpretation was supposed to start, the interpreter's accent in Korean was so difficult to understand, we ended the call early. The entirety of the call may have lasted 25 minutes but the interpreter stayed silent for most of the call before I ended it. The interpreter attempted to translate about 2-3 sentences but I had to intervene each time in order for my mother to understand. The interpreter's accent when speaking Korean made it extremely difficult to decipher what was being said. When I brought this to the sales representative Nancy Zuniga's attention, she replied back with the interpreter's feedback, where the interpreter stated my mother was actually understanding what was being said in English, and then insulted my mother's intelligence saying she did not understand legal terms in Korean. My mother did NOT understand what was being said, but she responded to the lawyer's comments by nodding and stating "mhmm" such as it is normal to do this in Korean culture. This was NOT a reflection of my mom understanding what he was saying, but rather a Korean cultural response in reciprocal conversation. My mother is intelligent enough to understand legal terms in Korean, and the reason why she could not understand what the interpreter was saying was NOT because she didn't know the words; she literally could not understand the interpreter's accent. I am bilingual in English and Korean and even I had a difficult time understanding and deciphering the interpreter's accent when she was attempting to translate.
