Romanian food in Trieste? Who knew! And, just half a block down from the Romanian Consulate, so you can combine a good meal with Eastern European bureaucratic officiousness and inefficiency at its worst. (Well, maybe not; I hear Slovenian Customs is worse.) Thankfully, Transilvania boasts a full bar.
And, it's a nice little place, well-lighted with a comfortable layout and good food. While there, I had a plate of 3 sarmale (stuffed cabbage), and a stuffed red pepper, both of which were authentically good Romanian food. I declined the sour cream topping, but that shows you this place knows what's its doing. There was plenty of mamaliga and gulyas on hand, and carnati are also occasionally offered. Bread and a Chino rounded out my meal, and the barkeep comped me a piece of great cheesecake for desert. I wonder if they also offer lichiu??? All this came to E14.
