Although first granted in 1763, the town was renamed Woodstock in 1840. Woodstock is located in Grafton county in the White Mountains of NH. The population is under 2000 residents but in the winter and summer months, it is considerably more, especially on weekends. Loon Mt. has the most vertical in the state and offers about 65 trails for skiing.

Recently we went to the Town Hall to do research for an 8th grade history project and we went in to…read moresee the Town Clerk's office staff to ask for help. EVERYONE in that office was SUPER nice. We were taken into the basement, inside a fireproof room, which housed official Alton, New Hampshire records since around 1900 to present. We dug through several volumes trying to find George Phippen, the man who once owned Mt. Major. We found out that he lived in a cottage on Beacon Ave which is part of the Christian Conference Center Camp. We were given instructions on going through NHDEEDS.com and we were able to find a scanned copy of the deed for the purchase of 60 acres at the very top of Mt. Major in 1915 and we found several years worth of tax records which really helped us form a timeline. The ladies in the office did not have to go out of their way to help us, but they did. We even left a phone number and one of the ladies did some additional searching and found deeds for the cottage on Beacon Street and she called and left a message on the machine telling us which page and article to search under so we could also see the original deeds. I can not say enough about living in Alton. It is a great place to live if you like small town living. People here have big hearts!

It took about 2 hours before I was seen. Which is expected at any place like this. * you CAN schedule an appt and skip the wait* (I didn't know this). There were 4-5 people staffed. The lady that helped me was WONDERFUL! I had so many questions. As Maine laws are much different than Wisconsin. Additionally, I'm young, so I don't know how all of this works. She answered every one, she was patient and kind with me. I would highly recommend this place to anybody!

We recently purchased a home here in the city of Saco, so I came down to City Hall (for the first…read moretime ever!) to file my bill of sale with the Assessor's Office. Everyone I encountered was incredibly helpful and small-town sweet. They seemed genuinely happy that I was joining the community! From the Assessor's Office they sent me to a different area of the building so I could check on the taxes to ensure the previous owners had kept up to date with their payments, which thankfully, they had! My time in City Hall was brief but enjoyable, makes moving from a large city to a small town make sense. I was super confused upon arrival, I didn't know what exactly it was that I was looking for, and had to wander around a bit before asking for assistance to get to where I needed to be. If there was a better way of helping citizens navigate their needs within the building, it would have made me feel more confident in my mission at hand.
