Zero stars for this crook, this is not where you want to take your business! He tried charging me $180 for a gear shift cable for my BMW, and when I called the dealership and asked what the cost was, they told me $90. I know there tends to be a markup, but double is just wrong. I told him that I will only pay $90 for the part, and he said he's "glad we're on the same page," whatever the hell that means, and assured me that my car would be ready in a couple days. Fast forward 1 week and 5 phone calls later...the car was still not done, so when I went in to get it, he'd done nothing and hadn't even picked up the part yet!! After 1 week!! I said I'm not leaving my car with you for one more day, so I had to wait while one of his goons went to the BMW dealership, got the part, and put it in. He had my car for one effing week and did the whole job in front of me in an hour and a half!! This guy is a shady crook and anyone considering giving him their business should run far, far away. Also, WTF is up with "Tranny Man," I guess he doesn't know what that implies? Simple clutch upgrade on a s2000, I'm providing a stage 2. After calling around the entire south bay... Labor costs are a$tronomical. By far this was the lowest quote Tranny Man, matched the same quote i received from a AM/PM Gas Station Garage. "Good rule of thumb is don't use a AM/PM mechanic unless your stuck out in the boondocks." go to a transmission only guy. they take care of flywheel resurfacing. Ask about the Rear Main Seal, that should always be inspected. & for high performance auto, spend the 20 bucks and get the seal. Frank checked out my rider, "Wow engines clean" So he knows I care a great deal about it. Frank also added some washers to some transmission bolts that he said were about to start leaking. Said he saved me an extra mechanic visit by doing so. Good guy to work with, works with you on the price. just try to get some sort of itemized list or game plan established so your on the same page. I brought in my 2005 Camry for 200K transmission oil change with parts to change out the old filter and new transmission oil pan gasket. He took a test drive with me to see if he detects and shifting problem. No transmission issue and had the oil, filter, and gasket replaced. It took about 2 hour to complete the job and he did what we agreed plus used his premium gasket without extra charge. Now three months gone by and no oil leaks and the transmission still working great. Will come back there for service again. read more

I was looking for a place to change transmission oil in my Mercedes C class car, and I was referred to Tranny Man by Skip's Tire Center on Cottle Road representative; I will make sure that they don't do that anymore. After seeing some bad reviews about this place (Tranny Man), I called them and asked Frank, if I could check their license. Guess what? He said, that no one asked him about it for 30 or so years, since this business was opened, and that I should take my business somewhere else. Very alerting! I've tried to find their license record using business name, but BAR (Bureau of Automotive Repair) website could not find it, no record found. Had my tranny rebuilt there. Still has the same problem. Now they want me to pull the tranny off so they can "see what's going on". Paid cash and all they gave me was a little receipt with a scribble. I have the conversations digitally recorded just for this reason. I went to the Tranny Man to have my transmition rebuilt. I delt directly with Frank. I paid $1100 to have it completely rebuilt and a shift kit put in. He would not give me a receipt despite many attempts on my part to obtain one. He did however give me the same speech about a 1 year warrenty. Well much to my surprise 3 days after getting the transmition back it broke down! Frank said that it wasn't their fault and charged me an additional $300 to fix it. I will never go to this shop again and based on the other reivews I've seen since it seems like this is just standard practice for them so do yourself a favor and go elsewhere to have work done for your transmition. read more

We had a transmission repaired and paid $2000 to rebuild it. When we picked up the car we paid in cash and drove it two blocks, same noise appeared that we brought it in for! We were a bit freaked out since we already handed over the cash. We immediately turned around and brought it back. It's a good thing the second time the transmission was rebuilt, it was rebuilt correctly....apparently we had a defective part the first time around but what a coincidence that the defective part made the same exact noise as when we brought the car in for repair in the first place. I'm not too sure about this place but in the end it was repaired correctly and the transmission shifts smoothly so I'll rate it three stars. They also took days longer than they said it would take. I am just happy the car is finally fixed and we didn't get ripped off but it was inconvenient to go there twice because the job was not right the first time. read more

Horrible place do not bring your vehicle here. It's the worst transmission shop in the Bay Area. I needed a rebuild for my transmission and when I got it back my transmission was leaking and not shifting properly. The workers here have lack of experience and are lairs. I had to report to the bureau of automotive. A lesson to be learned. read more

Business management has a Lack of morals and business ethics In January & February, while on vacation in California, it was necessary for me to cut the trip short due to death of a family member. On Feb. 5th on my drive back home, my car transmission broke down near San Jose, and I had the car towed and along the way we saw the Tranny Man shop, so arranged for them to replace the transmission at a cost of $1800.00, per invoice # 6033. I was impressed with the tidiness of their shop and assurances that their written and verbal 1 (one)yr, 12,000 mile warranty, given by the manager, Frank Martinez, would be honored even if the work had to be done at a distant shop, recognizing that I travelled and didn't live in the area. In subsequent telephone conversations with Frank, he reiterated that they would promptly honor the warranty by arrangements with a shop in the area where the failure occurred. As of July 23rd, the transmission has an internal problem with a bad shudder and slippage in the drive gears, confirmed by a reputable transmission shop in my home city, which problem they confirmed in a phone conversation with Frank. The cost to repair it would be a minimum of $1500 and maximum of $1890. I suggested that The Tranny Man pay the minimum and I'd pay any cost above that amount. Frank advised me that they would only honor the warranty if the car was brought to their shop, which, as he knows, is not possible as it is not drivable for any distance. So, they are not honoring their warranty commitment to have the repair done wherever it occurred, as understood, when they did the work. My mistakes were that I didn't check with the BBB first and didn't take the car to an ATRA accredited shop - not thinking clearly under my personal circumstances. My Tranny failed on me in Nov of 2011 in Palo Alto. The P.A guy told me $2500 and charged me $120 just to take down the vin and make a ph call...I rang Frank and he quoted me $2000 for a rebuild and he would pick the van up (Hector' Towing) and was there in 45 mins. Very Happy with that part. This was on a Saturday morning. Frank assured me that the van (E250) would be ready on Tuesday ...and true to his word the van was fully functional and ready to go on Tuesday! Very Happy with that too. I said that I would write a review on my experience with him and post it. As an update...the van transmission failed on a trip to Santa Rosa on a Saturday(again) just last week (12th Jan 2013). Knowing that there is a 12 mth 12,000 mile warranty on the tranny I rang Frank and let him know. He said bring it in and it will be ready ASAP. 1 AAA call later it was towed 100+ miles and I picked it up on Tuesday. The roller bearings had failed. Now for the low down and gritty parts... I needed to get some tools out of the van on Sunday, (This is in Nov '11) I drove down on spec and his Dad was just leaving the shop. To my surprise the Van was not there...not good. It was still on the back of the tow truck I guess, not happy about that at all. Jesse makes a call and we wait. In due course the van arrives and is unloaded into the workshop. I had a good talk with Jesse and came away satisfied with a sense of his personal integrity. I give 5 stars to Jesse for his customer service. Of course, the vehicle breaking down again only two months into a new life is not a good testimony. It ran for 16 yrs on an original transmission, 2 months just doesn't cut it. I give a 1 star for that. Frank being true to his delivery times gets him 5 stars, and of course, honouring the warranty gets him 5 stars too. The van not being on-site after pick-up and it breaking down again cost points. It cost me lost income the second time. I really do hope that there are no further problems...I'll keep you posted. read more

Well it goes like this I has the tranny man rebuild my transmission and the car didn't have no power so I brought it back to Frank and he told me give it a while because it's like a new car it needs to loosen up ,funny thing is every car I've boughten has been new and had power this car was new with only 3mile on the speedometer when I first bought it ,well a mount went by and it stop working so I let them rebuild it once more this is twice now and the same thing is wrong this time I sat down with Frank and asked for my money back and he refused he said to take him to court because the court was on his side it would only make him pay me back a few dollars at a time ,so think about it would you let them fix your transmission for a third time if they couldn't get it right the two times before ?
