Do you believe in fairy tales that you've only read about in books?…read more This place is unbelievable, literally straight out of a storybook. It's THE most picturesque place I've visited on my trip to Germany. Rathen is a small town in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by lush mountains, the imminent Elbe River where very few people speak English. Curious people asked us where we are from, clearly Asians don't venture out in these parts. Set at the top of the mountain, this medieval castle turned hotel has been around since the 11th century. You'll enjoy views from the top after climbing the steep hill and the views are worth it. Even better to find that there's a restaurant that serves hearty German food in a very warm, welcoming setting. Our server was reserved at first, but she loosened up after a bit of chit chat. After consulting with her on the menu, we put our orders in. Is there anything better than a Radeberger Pilsner? 0.5 liter bier for only 2 euros! what a way to start dinner! I had the pasta with white cabbage and smoked pork chop topped with a generous amount of cheese. It was a crisp spring day so this was really comforting to have in my belly. Their bratwurst, sauerkraut, bratkartoffeln was a classic German dish done well. For a castle-like dining experience, I feel that the prices are affordable, especially for the amount of food you get. We left here with full bellies and giggly smiles, the only thing missing was an elevator so we didn't have to hike back down the hill.

To be completely honest this hotel feels like someone crammed all the must-haves of a 5 star hotel…read morewithout paying attention to design, condition, quality etc. All together, hotel has a large number of accommodations, spa, pool, medicinal procedures, however it feels more like a hospital than it does a hotel. The entire place feels run down and highly out of date. It felt like I was staying in an old soviet sanatorium rather than a nice hotel. In terms of food, it was mostly cold, and the choices in the buffet are quite bland. As for the positives, the gym was incredible. Fully accommodated fitness center no different to one that you pay much more money for. Very good deal for this one in my opinion. Overall, I'd only recommend this hotel for the gym, however it's open to visitors who aren't hotel guests for a small fee. (I stayed in Oct. 2024 and am writing this review a few months later so please consider this before taking my review into account)

Understand that I really like this place and want to see it do well. The rooms are huge, and while…read morenormally that isn't a complaint, you feel like the room is a missed opportunity which could be fixed by a mild upgrade. The service needs a slight overhaul in that the systems don't seem clear and the staff seem a little disjointed. The front desk staff could provide concierge level information in the absence of an actual concierge desk and easily direct the doorman on expectations regarding the car and parking. The valet service could be more direct on how the system will work so that the cars don't back up on the hill entrance to the hotel. And the pool attendant could be more helpful and learn only the needed english to be customer service friendly. Since she was combative, tons of patrons seemed lost rather than going to her. And if there is something that is stated to be offered in the room like a gift from one of the hotel's stores, then it should also be left at the desk for when they are closed. Because of the old world charm of the hotel and the truly huge advantage for upgrade to this off the path location, I hope they improve in some key areas which stands to make this a great place to visit.

It's also clean and comfortable, however there were a few niggles. You don't automatically get a towel in your room, but the staff are happy to provide you with one on request, it was however closer to a tee-towel though in proportion. Furthermore, the shower in my room wasn't the best with the temperature fluctuating widely as well as the shower head spraying the water in every direction other than me which is quite impressive considering my stature which could never be described as skinny. I'd also recommend taking ear plugs as the nearby church decided to make itself known to us at 7am, which is never a welcome time after an evening of drinking. There was also some drilling being carried out near to the hotel, further impeding my sleep plans.

It attracts local women who always dreamed of being photographed by a top photographer. While all hotels appreciate the business, we have now been contacting this hotel and particularly Mr, Dunger since October 2019. While mails have been ignored for months, on our calls a very kind Sebastian Groß assured the rooms we need were available and they would so much love to have us. Now, in February 2020, Mr. Dunger informs us that it is the hotel's policy to generally not host events like ours. I understand and accept this decision, but entirely fail to understand why it took them five months to pass such key information to us. So if you plan an event there, you may want to be careful.

Why 4 stars and not 5? We were hit with a bill for two nights parking at 30 Euro per night. When booking on the Holiday Inn website, one is asked to add breakfast for max 2 people at 15 Euro. Why does the website not ask if one is interested in a parking space at 30 Euro per night? This would make it very clear that the parking at the hotel is not free. Still, I highly recommend the Holiday Inn in Zwickau.
